FEMA denies aid to Arizona counties after disastrous monsoon floods

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) on Wednesday denied aid to Arizona counties after September flooding. Local officials estimate there was more than $30 million in damage to public infrastructure and homes.
The people of Gila and Mohave County were devastated by flooding from severe monsoon storms this September. Now, theyve been denied support from the federal government with little explanation, Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs (D) said in a statement. By denying much-needed relief, this administration is leaving Arizonans out on their own after their homes, businesses, roads, and bridges were decimated by historic storms, she added.
Hobbs said the state would appeal FEMAs denial for disaster relief. The Department of Homeland Security, which houses FEMA, did not immediately respond to The Hills request for comment on the matter.
However, the Trump administration has sought to shrink federal disaster assistance to states and denied disaster relief to Colorado after a series of wildfires and floods earlier this year, with strong objections from Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D).

(1,396 posts)The state must be punished. Republican presidents don't respond to disasters in states run by Democrats. Bush had to be shamed into getting into gear when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans. We had a Democratic governor at the time.

(32,217 posts)And we sure as hell don't have a Democratic governor. Abbott couldn't be more of a hyper-Republican asshole, even if he tried---although incompetence was FEMA's "excuse" for the shameful Texas situation, rather than political revenge. Either way, we're in trouble.

AZ went back into his column in 2024 too. I think not in 2026 or 2028 if elections are still allowed to happen.

I.e., part of his "revenge tour".

But Trump? Meh.
