Republican senators are trying to put the brakes on talk of invoking the Insurrection Act to quell angry protests against immigration officers in Minneapolis after one fatally shot a 37-year-old mother of three, Renee Good.
Invoking the law, which was last updated in 1874, would allow President Trump to mobilize active-duty troops or federalized National Guard troops to the streets of Minneapolis amid growing civil unrest over actions by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers.
GOP lawmakers are leery of the prospect of sending a wave of troops to Minneapolis when images of masked ICE officers, wearing helmets and ballistic-resistant vests, engaged in heated exchanges with protesters have dominated television and online news in recent days.
Asked if invoking the Insurrection Act to deploy troops to Minneapolis to quell the protests would be appropriate, Senate Armed Services Committee Chair Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) responded, Probably not. Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaska) said the administration needs to be very careful to lower the potential for conflict with local communities during ICE law enforcement operations.

(26 posts)The irony is nauseating. Just 48 hours ago, Trump was on Truth Social telling Iranian protesters "HELP IS ON ITS WAY" and urging them to "take over your institutions." He celebrates protests as "patriotic" when they happen in Tehran, but brands them as "insurrection" when Americans demand accountability for a federal killing on US soil.
Apparently, the right to protest is a sacred value to this administrationunless youre an American exercising it against them. We are watching the federal government occupy a U.S. city to protect a rogue agency while the President plays "freedom fighter" abroad. This isn't just a dark day for democracy; it's a full-on authoritarian mask-off moment.
