Trump says he may punish countries with tariffs if they don't back the US controlling Greenland

Source: AP

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he may punish countries with tariffs if they don’t back the U.S. controlling Greenland. Trump didn’t provide details Friday.

Trump says the United States needs Greenland for national security. Trump for months has insisted that the U.S. should control Greenland, a self-governing territory that is part of the kingdom of Denmark. But the Republican president had not previously mentioned using tariffs to try to force the issue.

European leaders have joined Denmark in saying the U.S. can’t control the world’s largest island.

If Floyd was still around he might show a movie called “Tariffs of the Living Dead” or something like that.

Congress is supposed to have control of 'the purse strings', with the purpose of limiting the power of the President! Tariffs are being used as a PERSONAL weapon, without regard to the harm that is being done to the nation's economy or global standing!

should be to disentangle itself from its US trade relations to the extent possible.

Having any sort of dependent trade relation with the US is a major liability. Rational companies and governments have to eliminate this level of arbitrary uncertainty.

Trumps tariffs have harmed nobody as much as they have American citizens. Not just in the short term, but forever. For instance yesterday Canada announced a trade deal with China on that removed the ban on Chinese EVs. With the US tariffs on cars and the nonsense that entailed, Canada has lifted the ban on EV imports, thus removing the protection that the North American auto industry enjoyed. Few Canadians will be buying $80k F150s, when a Chinese truck costing half as much is available. the auto industry was worth well over a trillion dollars a year.
Trump recently enlisted help from Denmark in the capture of ships carrying Venezuelan oil - which it received. It has been reported tha they just asked for assistance with attacks on Iran - presumably as a point for refuelling? So they are asking for help from a country they have said they will be partially annexing - by force if necessary. Part of the reason for asking for refuelling in Denmark is probably because they anticipate European/NATO countries to refuse permission to launch strikes on Iran from bases in their countries, but the US problems in attacking Iran also have a lot to do with the US not having its usual aircraft carriers in the region, because they are in the Caribbean threatening Venezuela, Colombia, possibly Brazil ? and Cuba. All that, when this passed year has seen the US bomb Syria, Venezuela, Iran, Yemen and Nigeria - its also announced its intention to retake parts of Afghanistan, annexing Canada and Iceland and possibly going to war with NATO and Russia, at the same time as deploying the US military on US oil to bring martial law and the end of US elections..
I don't think tariffs scare anyone anymore and for many, watching the US accelerate it's levels of self harm just makes us hopeful of a quicker end to the country that has inflicted such misery on the world.
