McCain: Assault Weapons Ban Can’t Pass Congress
Source: TPM
PEMA LEVY 11:02 AM EST, SUNDAY JANUARY 13, 2013
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Sunday that he does not believe an assault weapons ban can pass the Congress nor that one should.
Appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation," McCain used Norway as an example of how people with mental health issues can acquire guns and kill people despite strict gun laws.

McCain: There Are Significant Questions About Hagel And Brennan
PEMA LEVY 10:56 AM EST, SUNDAY JANUARY 13, 2013
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) said Sunday that he looked forward to the nomination hearings for former Sen. Chuck Hagel (R-NE) who is nominated to be the next secretary of defense, saying he hasn't made up his mind on how to vote.
Appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation," McCain laid out the questions he would ask Hagel during the confirmation hearings. "What is his view on America's role in the world? Whether he really believes that the surge was the worst blunder since the Vietnam War?" McCain said.
"I have always believed that a president deserves the right to choose his own team, but there are significant questions," McCain said, referring to both Hagel and John Brennan, Obama's pick to run the CIA.

(5,191 posts)Then he and those who oppose it can step up to the plate and explain to the families of the victims of the next assault weapon massacre and explain to them why they refused to do anything to prevent it.

(16,064 posts)dumbass , the problem is now and always has been the easy access to guns and ammunition.
OTOH if you feel a need to have a concealed weapon, a handgun or an assault rifle there is a real possibility that you are mentally ill and should therefor not be allowed to purchase one.
The desire to purchase one of these should be enough proof of mental illness to disallow the sale.

(2,484 posts)The desire to post something so hyperbolic, broad-brushed, and frankly offensive to the mentally disabled, should be proof someone is not mature enough to discuss adult matters.
Guns and ammunition aren't going anywhere. A new AWB WILL pass, and it is a start. But shouting down the mental-health aspect sounds very Republican-esque. This is a chance to improve not only gun regulation, but mental-health treatment and monitoring. Undo the damage that making mental health a taboo topic that the 80s did.
Why can't we have both? I think we can, but comments like yours, which I do realize are an extremely tiny yet vocal minority, will leave us with the status-quo. Some executive order for better back-ground checks, any loop-holes for no background checks (gun show, etc) is all we will get if we come to the table with that sort of position.
And by "comments like yours", I am referring to what I quoted, along with the "all gun owners are mass-murderer" statements that are not helpful by any means.

(15,139 posts)death photos of the children slaughtered in Connecticut (with the families' permission of course) be displayed on the floor of the House and Senate. I'm not sure too many of these fools would change their minds, but it might make a hell of an impression on the public and give rise to outrage that might eventually prompt some action. We never see the actual carnage. I think that should change.

(16,984 posts)...I understand that after brand-new (Democratic) Senator Heidi Heitkamp expressed opposition to new gun measures, basically said they wouldn't pass, her opposition was the subject of an advertising campaign, and she evidently tempered her remarks.
I haven't much faith that will work with McCain, especially given the ferocity of the GOP's digging-in approach following their failure to win either the White House or the Senate, but still, a few losses in the court of public opinion might make some difference.
What I hate most is people announcing in advance how the vote will go, especially after the scores of occasions the GOP misused the threat of filibuster.

(37,329 posts)Repubs continue their "Fuck America" legislation which doesn't pass the Senate and democrats push legislation that Americans want, which the republicans don't pass. The message should become clear for the 2014 elections.

(13,297 posts)McCain has proven you can outlive your usefulness in society if you try hard enough and really work diligently at it.
And to think he was THE Republican's choice for leading the country... shows how stupid Republicans are at their very foundation, especially when you top that stupid-sundae with a Sarah Palin cherry.

(19,242 posts)A lot of DUers have gotten grilled for saying it, but the votes simply aren't there to pass sweeping gun laws. It would require dozens of Republicans, as well as many pro-gun Democrats, to vote with the rest of the pro-control Democrats in the House to pass anything. And the President can't unilaterally ban them through executive priveledge either.
The best to hope for is probably closing the "gun show loophole" and maybe banning magazines of more than 10 rounds. And in exchange for this, we'll face a re- energized NRA in 2014 and 2016 with millions in new funding and members.
I doubt even a limit on magazine capacity would make it through.
All I see happening are some changes to background checks and maybe something having to do with mental health.

(24,764 posts)Either they pass common sense gun safety measures or the President can have the Justice Dept. investigate the NRA for bribing and/or extorting public officials.
