Ken Cuccinelli: I知 Fighting The Contraception Mandate Just Like Martin Luther King, Jr
Source: TPM
Virginia chooses a new governor this November, and Democrats are already firing with both barrels at state Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli, the likely Republican nominee to replace Gov. Bob McDonnell (R).
Cuccinelli makes a very easy target, especially when like he did once again Monday he compares his fight against the contraception coverage mandate found in Obamacare to the non-violent civil rights struggle led by Martin Luther King, Jr.
On Monday, MLK Day, Cuccinelli again made the comparison between his fight against the federal requirement that birth control be offered with no copay by insurance plans to Kings fight for equal rights for African Americans. Cuccinelli earned some headlines earlier this month when he told an Iowa show that opponents of the mandate need to be prepared to go to jail in protest of the law. (He later tried to walk that back a bit.)
Cuccinelli was asked Monday about the controversy on The John Fredericks Show, a conservative talk show in Virginia. He was shocked Democrats would raise the issue, casting the battle as a struggle for rights rather than an attack on contraception.

(14,177 posts)the fight to limit women's access to birth control is just like fighting for civil rights. Let me know when this asshat gets beaten with batons and has a fire hose turned on him.

(36,974 posts)... why the Republicans cannot understand that access to low cost and/or free contraceptives results in a lower abortion rate, less spending on welfare/medicaid, a chance for more girls to obtain a higher education, the opportunity for women to earn more income over the total of their lifetimes, to have control over their own bodies and keep government out females vaginas, etc.
I am beginning to think that the Republicans want to keep females poor and at home barefoot and pregnant so that they will just have something to complain about when food stamp and medicaid spending increases!
Grrrr.

If women would just plan to marry and stay home then things would be ducky for these guys, so they think.

(111,257 posts)MLK's life was affected by racism and discrimination every single day of his life.
Cuccinelli has never had to worry about how to pay for birth control so that he can keep his job and his health and his sanity a single day of his stinking, entitled life.
And he thinks there is a parallel here?
Oh, please, somebody in Virginia attack this man with a clue by four and whack him with it until it starts to sink in.
Insurance companies will still make enough to pay him their fat dividends every year. He's got nothing to worry about.

(16,079 posts)The man has 7 kids, from all appearances he's a devout Papist...the use of birth control is anathema to him. That's what this is all about him forcing his religious beliefs on others...him and McDonnell!

and exerpt:
"The Negro constitutes half the poor of the nation. Like all poor, Negro and white, they have many unwanted children. This is a cruel evil they urgently need to control. There is scarcely anything more tragic in human life than a child who is not wanted. That which should be a blessing becomes a curse for parent and child. There is nothing inherent in the Negro mentality which creates this condition. Their poverty causes it. When Negroes have been able to ascend economically, statistics reveal they plan their families with even greater care than whites. Negroes of higher economic and educational status actually have fewer children than white families in the same circumstances.
Some commentators point out that with present birth rates it will not be long before Negroes are a majority in many of the major cities of the nation. As a consequence, they can be expected to take political control, and many people are apprehensive at this prospect. Negroes do not seek political control by this means. They seek only what they are entitled to and do not wish for domination purchased at the cost of human misery. Negroes were once bred by slave owners to be sold as merchandise. They do not welcome any solution which involves population breeding as a weapon. They are instinctively sympathetic to all who offer methods that will improve their lives and offer them fair opportunity to develop and advance as all other people in our society.
For these reasons we are natural allies of those who seek to inject any form of planning in our society that enriches life and guarantees the right to exist in freedom and dignity."
