Alabama Standoff Update: Hostage situation ends, 5-year-old child is safe, kidnapper dead, U.S. official says
February 04, 2013
(CBS/AP) MIDLAND CITY, Ala. - A U.S. official tells CBS News that a nearly week-long hostage standoff in which a 5-year-old was being held captive in southeast Alabama has ended in the kidnapper's death. The child is said to be okay.
Authorities said 65-year-old Jimmy Dykes gunned down a school bus driver Tuesday and abducted a 5-year-old boy from the bus before taking him to an underground bunker on his rural property. The driver, 66-year-old Charles Poland Jr., was buried Sunday.
Dykes, a decorated Vietnam-era veteran described as a loner who railed against the government, lived up a dirt road just off the main road north to the state capital of Montgomery, about 80 miles away.
CBS radio affiliate WSB says reporters heard what may have been a concussion grenade before ambulance and fire vehicles went to and from Dykes' property about 4p.m. Eastern Time Monday.

(57,936 posts)Any one of us can be narcissistic to some extent, but almost by definition, very right-wing people who do not believe in helping others, who want their guns and have a self-centered definition of freedom are mentally ill. Those are the traits of narcissism as well as some other mental illnesses.
Campbell and Foster (2007)[15] review the literature on narcissism. They argue that narcissists possess the following "basic ingredients":
Positive: Narcissists think they are better than others.[16]
Inflated: Narcissists' views tend to be contrary to reality. In measures that compare self-report to objective measures, narcissists' self-views tend to be greatly exaggerated.[17]
Agentic: Narcissists views tend to be most exaggerated in the agentic domain, relative to the communion domain.[clarification needed][16][17]
Special: Narcissists perceive themselves to be unique and special people.[18]
Selfish: Research upon narcissists behaviour in resource dilemmas supports the case for narcissists as being selfish.[19]
Oriented toward success: Narcissists are oriented towards success by being, for example, approach oriented.[clarification needed][20]
. . .
Malignant narcissism
Malignant narcissism, a term first coined in a book by Erich Fromm in 1964,[38] is a syndrome consisting of a cross breed of the narcissistic personality disorder, the antisocial personality disorder, as well as paranoid traits. The malignant narcissist differs from narcissistic personality disorder in that the malignant narcissist derives higher levels of psychological gratification from accomplishments over time (thus worsening the disorder). Because the malignant narcissist becomes more involved in this psychological gratification, in the context of the right conditions, they are apt to develop the antisocial, the paranoid, and the schizoid personality disorders. The term malignant is added to the term narcissist to indicate that individuals with this disorder have a powerful form of narcissism that has made them ill in the forms of paranoid and anti-social traits.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Narcissism#Collective_or_group_narcissism
Narcissism leads to paranoia and then to big problems. No one of us is the center of the world. When we think that we are, we are in trouble. It's a tough balance. What we today call the "conservative philosophy" is virtually the textbook description of narcissism.
In my opinion, the characters that Ayn Rand described as her "heroes" were narcissists. Quite possibly verging on or actually paranoid.

(775 posts)With conservatives thinking liberals were brainwashed, had diseases or something else.
Seriously, this is just a nasty and wrong way of thinking.
Why can't we disagree with the other side without hating them? Why can't they disagree with us without hating us?
And no, I don't want to hear "This is different because..." They say the same things.

(17,528 posts)Since there was an explosion before the gunshot it sounds like the police had done something...like blasting in and then Kidnapper killed himself. Maybe even the police killer him? We' ll find out in a few minutes. Thank god the boy is alive and OK. He must have a very happy mother!

(15,590 posts)a decorated Vietnam Era veteran? According to what I read he got a Vietnam Service Medal (everyone who landed there got one) and a Good Conduct Medal. Sorry, that doesn't qualify as a 'decorated' veteran in my book. Glad the child is ok............

(61,712 posts)Millions and millions of people have mental health issues. The vast majority of us don't do what this man did. The vast majority of us don't listen to hate radio all day long. This man may have been mentally unbalanced. Hate radio swooped in and took advantage of that. They wanted another foot soldier in their war. Sometimes the foot soldiers go a little too far.

(153,193 posts)when I see what rightwing garbage has done to "regular" folk, it is not much of a stretch to believe it could do massive harm to someone who is already unbalanced

(14,779 posts)First you have to get an idea of how big a place he is hold up in. Then build a duplicate. Train your men (WHo I will call the "attacking group" on how to enter the compound and NOT kill the child. The Duplicate does NOT have to be exact, just whatever barriers the Police may face be addressed (in the training exercise, the wall can be paper, but have the Attacking Group being train to treat them as if they were solid).
You have the Attacking force that will take the compound do it over and over again, so that it becomes second nature to them. Military units do this all the time, if they know the actual operation they will be performing, they do it over and over again till it is automatic with them.
Once the attacking force is trained, you wait till the best possible time. Best when the Hostage taker is asleep. Over a few days an observer will notice when the hostage holder sleeps and where, that is given to the attacking group who modify they plans accordingly.
Then the attack order is given and the attack group goes in. Te operation is over is 2-5 seconds.
Please note the Attacking force does NOT have to be near where they are attacking while they are training. They can be at a Central Location where they can train in secret and then driven or flown to the site where they are to take out the Hostage Taker.
Such an operation has to take a few days, to rush it is to go in NOT knowing where the Hostage taker is, NOT knowing where the Hostage is AND not trained so that everything comes automatically to the attacking force.

Modern warfare destroys human beings. We need to make sure it is kept incredibly rare. We need to get the chickenhawk neocons out of our government and out of the Pentagon. And some day, war needs to be obsolete.

(5,732 posts)This guy saw no combat in Vietnam. However, he could have been in DaNang during the Tet Offensive of 68. The VC came pretty close to over running the base during that ordeal. We had a detachment in DaNang, we would rotate people down there from our home base in Atsugi Japan. We were a naval aviation surveillance squadron.
