The vote Tuesday was 58-41, with four Republicans joining Democrats in backing President Barack Obama's nominee.

On the vote, two Democrats did not vote - Mark Udall of Colorado and Frank Lautenberg of New Jersey.

I want to know which republicons voted with the Dems but don't see anyone reporting it, yet.

These are our representatives, wasting everyone's money, time and energy, to arrive at exactly where it was going anyway.
We're surrounded by pressing, time-sensitive issues that'll directly cost us scads of money and they chose instead to piss away weeks on this.
People need to absorb this and the loss it represents on other fronts so they can react to it.

They need to BLAME and then translate it into votes.

Dear Nancy -

Moments ago, by a vote of 58 to 41, the U.S. Senate confirmed Chuck Hagel as our country's next Secretary of Defense.

Few understand the sacrifices made by our troops and military families better than Secretary Hagel.

He'll be the first enlisted man to serve in the position, was awarded two Purple Hearts (his brother earned three), and made a career of advocating for veterans in the U.S. Senate.

That's why VoteVets drove tens of thousands of petitions, letters and calls into the Senate during the confirmation process.

Share your thoughts, priorities and well-wishes for Secretary Hagel, and we'll deliver them to the Defense Department next week.

http://action.votevets.org/hagel

You should be proud of our collective effort in this fight -- the voice of veterans and military families made a real difference in overcoming the first ever filibuster of a Secretary of Defense nominee.

And while a number of Republicans put patriotism over party today, it was sad to see once proud moderates like Lindsey Graham cower in fear of a potential primary campaign.

But overcoming the right-wing smears ensures Chuck Hagel emerges from this process stronger than he entered -- fully vetted, battle-tested and ready to lead on day one.

I hope you'll share your thoughts and priorities for Secretary Hagel at the link below -- it's an opportunity to have your voice heard by the incoming leadership at the Department of Defense.

President Obama can't stoop to the level of these rightwingnuts, because he has to maintain the decorum and the aura of the office of the Presidency. But the Sec Def can be as bad-ass as he wants to be and I certainly hope he seeks his revenge. If I were Hagel, I would not take a scalpel to the Defense budget but a hatchet and I would start in the Red States. I would certainly like to see any base closures jobcuts originate and end in those states where those senators all took their symbolic vote against him. To do otherwise, does not make him the bigger man, it would make him a fool. After all, these people were out to destroy him, for sport, not in the name of truth, or otherwise. They had a vendetta against this President, and a score to settle for Hagel's criticism of the Bush Administration but in the final analysis, they are just plain evil. I hope Hagel becomes the Godfather of the Defense Dept and those senators who screwed over him will soon have to kiss his ring.

It's all over Twitter.

He's a Republican, for pete's sake. Is it just because he was appointed by Obama?

As far as I'm concerned he's a run-of-the-mill Republican and I'm sure he's an asshole, but not for the reasons the Tea Baggers think.

take the knife to a lot of expensive exotic weapons that the Pentagon doesn't really want but are a jobs/subsidy to big armament companies.

Among the things he has said that have an ominous ring (for those living off the Defense dept largesse) is that the Defense Department is not a jobs creator.

He will have an eye on how the defense budget impacts regular enlisted guys.

I think that the Pentagon is going to love him because they have tired from getting expensive toys and then not being able to get the stuff they actually think they need.

So here you have graham and mccain lashing Hagel because they don't think he loves Israel enough. I wonder if they decided to back off worried that they might lose some of their strongest supporters.
