Mich. Gov. Snyder Declares Financial Emergency In Detroit; Emergency Manager Candidate In Mind

Source: Associated Press

DETROIT (AP) -- Gov. Rick Snyder said Friday he has declared a financial emergency in Detroit, a determination that could lead to the appointment of an emergency manager over the city's finances.

Snyder told The Associated Press that his decision on whether to appoint an emergency manager will come after the city's 10-day appeals process. He said Mayor Dave Bing's office already has been notified of a March 12 hearing date.

Snyder said he already has a candidate in mind for the emergency manager position, but declined Friday to released details about that person.

The move was all but guaranteed after a review team reported to Snyder on Feb. 19 that Detroit was in a financial emergency and needed the state's help to emerge from it. A review team first looked into Detroit's books in December 2011, but stopped short of declaring a financial emergency.

Really, it didn't really recover from the '67 riots.

And it is sad.

10. Generally, Snyder and his Koch cronies have problems with democracy,

judging by what happened in the legislature after the election. It was a complete travesty.

My suggestion was to name Mayor Dave Bing as the emergency manager. He would be something of an elected dictator.

while maintaining the same infrastructure is one good way. The city is too large for its population. I don't know how to solve that particular problem but someone will have to in order to stem the bleeding.

would be more accurate if it read: "When a review team first assessed Detroit's assets..."

This is a redistribution of wealth alright, from the city of Detroit to the highest bidder.

Can't believe Michiganders are letting thishappen.

With Governor’s Snyder’s announcement that an emergency manager is on the way, the time for navel-gazing and re-litigating the past is over. It’s time to finally take strong, even radical, action to fix Detroit.

So, what to do now?

I do not pretend to have a magic formula. But I think a new mindset is needed — one that starts with accepting where the city is and a willingness to confront its problems without fear or preconditions. Here are some ideas for where to start:
- First of all, we need to all agree that apocalyptic predictions of ever-worsening doom are not helpful. Of course Detroit’s problems are solvable. It might be hard to solve them. Solving them might require a lot more courage and innovative thinking than we have mustered so far. But Detroit’s predicament was brought about by human beings and can be solved by them.
