Cuomo As Hitler Posters Defended By NRA President
Posted: 03/01/2013 6:19 pm EST | Updated: 03/01/2013 9:05 pm EST

WASHINGTON -- National Rifle Association President David Keene on Friday defended the decision by gun rights activists in Albany, N.Y., to wave signs depicting Democratic New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo as Hitler. The signs were prevalent at a protest Thursday against New York state's new gun regulations, where Keene spoke to a crowd of approximately 5,000 gun rights supporters.

Asked about the Nazi imagery during an appearance on the AM 1300 radio show "Live from the State Capitol," Keene told host Fred Dicker that the signs were in reference to the fact that dictators have historically limited citizens' gun rights.

"Folks that are cognizant of the history, not just in Germany but elsewhere, look back to the history and say we can’t let that sort of thing happen here,” Keene said.

Gun regulations recently passed in New York State include an expanded ban on the sale of military-style assault weapons, and a ban on gun magazines that carry more than seven rounds. Signs at the protest depicted Cuomo with a Hitler-style mustache, dressed in a Nazi party uniform, and raising his right hand in the Nazi party salute. One such sign read, "All in favor of 'gun control' please raise your right hand..."

this is not acceptable.

However, as someone who is for Gay marriage and equality, what Andrew Cuomo and Mario Cuomo did when the Cuomo campaign smeared Ed Koch back in 1977 is unforgiveable, and I would never, ever vote for Andrew in a primary at any time in the future.
It's hard to say which smear here is worse.
Neither was/is acceptable.
And what AndrewMario did then will never be forgotten, and I thank Ed Koch for allowing the final audio/video obit with the NY Times to be done and released showing the smear to have occured and Koch telling the world he had not forgotten about it.

And I am happy Mayor Bloomberg has nudged Andrew Cuomo on the gun issue. Took Andrew a long time to do it.

I agree 100% with Mayor Bloomberg and the dozens of other mayors in their anti-gun stance.

And you are right about he can't be Hillary's VP\

Andrew didn't do it for any other reason than political posturing and possibly to attempt to atone for 1977.
But it didn't work.
Andrew ran Mario's campaign.
Everything was done by the two of them.

And the oddity is, Mario is far more liberal than his son.

I would by the way, vote for him if he is on the ticket, but I won't vote for him in a primary.

I think he has done many good things. I think though that NY SAFE is an abomination, not only in itself but how it was passed. I think Cuomo did it quite "sleazy" and anyone who cares about the democratic process should be ashamed. Passing a memo of necessity to wave the 3 day comment period so the public couldn't react. Yes, the majority of NYers agree with it (mainly do to ignorance) but that still doesnt justify preventing millions of NYers from participating in the process.

I know some on DU are all okay with turning their heads when it comes to this as long as it is something they agree with. That's fine, but then you should have no complaints about warrantless wire-tapping, the patriot act, and any other republican scheme that gets forced down our throat using "less then democratic means".

read what I said, i used the term "little". I do not think Gov. Cuomo is hitler, I happen to like many things he has done and voted for him. But the way in which NY SAFE was passed was questionably un-democratic. I don't like laws being passed in the middle of the night, especially with no public comment time- NO MATTER WHO IS IN CHARGE.

And being an adult- I'm fully capable of criticizing those who I support. I'm fully capable of saying "I love my mother but she has faults"....only a kid says "I love my mother, and if you don't love her then there is something wrong with you"

Here is also a suggestion, why don't you read up on how the law was passed, and let that sink in. I hope you are okay with it, because the next time some republican tries something similar, you have no right to complain.

It's not the bill itself, it's the way it was passed. If the gov. had passed this through the normal channels than I'd say those people have absolutely no leg to stand on. But if you are arguing that the governor was acting like a dictator in the way he passed this legislation- well you could legitimately argue that (though dictator is def. too strong a word).

On edit: I'm referring to the late night back room deals and waving of the 3 day comment period in order to get the legislation passed before anyone could say anything.

to Hitler. Leaving aside the fact that comparisons aren't even close and that it's incredibly insensitive to the Jewish population (as well as to many others), it's just an incredibly lazy way to make an argument. Instead of clearly explaining WHY you should be pissed about what a politician is doing, they hope that equating them with Hitler will help convince people that this is a bad guy (or a bad policy) without ever having to apply any logic.

Besides, everyone knows that Bush was Hitler.

The difference between the extremists that thought Bush was the anti Christ, and those that believe the same sort of thing about President Obama is obvious.
The NRA is an organization that claims many members and a lot of political clout. They brag about it. They claim they represent honor and American values. This is the reality of modern right wing attempts at destroying American cohesion. Right wing extremism is obviously being propagated by the MSM, as it follows corporate "news-for-profit" dictum.

Most likely the propagators of the Bush-as-Hitler meme weren't legitimate policy makers and political party leaders-there is a difference in kind and impact that you are not acknowledging. And the difference is immense.
Common sense would have to bite a right wing Teabagger on the face to get them to acknowledge it.

Please take your false equivalency and examine it closely for what it reveals about your intentions and the true ends they imply.

Tue Mar 5, 2013, 02:14 AM

extremism is always a toxic ingredient in our body politic- no matter the source. The influence of the extremists in the right wing is much more powerful as it has the full approval of national policy makers and legislators. They are also busy enacting extremist legislation on state and local levels by utilizing the complicity of the MSM and Republican party endorsements in attempting to appear to be sensible. The Chamber of Commerce and other "business"-rights organizations can be counted on to pay for the ad campaign that makes right wing extremism seem like common sense solutions.
Extremists from the American Left just don't seem to have the equivalent influence on American policy making.

probably going back to when Patakai wrote what he used to call "toughest gun laws in the country. How many years ago was that? Before the Safe Act, NRA ranked NYS at the bottom of the country for "gun rights". As far as the NRA goes, no laws at all would be what THEY want. "Good guys with guns" are the solution to "bad guys with guns". Let the felons and mentally imparied have their guns? The good guys (gun owners) can just shoot them.

Ignore the NRA.
