Pelosi: Assault weapons ban will not pass Congress

Source: MSNBC

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said the assault weapons ban passing Congress is unlikely in an interview with the Denver Post Monday. Pelosi focused on another attainable goal—passing legislation requiring all gun buyers to get a background check.

“Where we can make the most difference is with background checks and information shared,” Pelosi said. “Let’s keep guns out of the wrong hands. There’s more of a rally around background checks…and some (Democratic) unity around mental-health issues.

Progress for the bill expanding background checks for private gun purchases recently stalled after Sen. Tom Coburn withdrew his support. Coburn rejected the clause requiring private sellers to keep sales records for transactions. Since then, Schumer has begun a search for a second Republican co-sponsor.

Smart move to not fight the un-winnable battle. Once they resolve the issue about sales records for private sales, we will see universal background checks.

... now they will have all the legislation written and ready for the assault weapons ban - and when the next huge mass killing happens in the future they will be able to bring the bill to the floor quickly and get it passed more easily.

Just a thought.

Next time will be the same as this time. There are way too many folks enjoying the shooting sports with these guns for it to get any easier. (One estimate I saw recently was at least 4M AR-15's alone, never mind all the other kinds of guns that would be affected by the proposed "ban".)

I say pass a Universal Background Check law, including Mental Health Reporting. Amend HIPAA as needed, And then make enough available funds to states, so there is no excuse for not reporting violations, or prosecuting, and jailing the hell of Straw Buyers, or felons who attempt to buy guns.

Of course Congress has the perpetual habit of "We MUST do something!" Or at least SEEN "To be doing something", while not actually funding the law they just passed.

Isnt it weird that nobody talks about ending drone strikes because it tends to kill a lot women and children and other innocent men in the process.

Say goodbye to anonymous firearms ownership. It can't exist in the same reality.

10. Should do it like my home state of Pennsylvania, only mandatory checks for private sales of Pistols,

Given that most deaths are by pistols, they are by far the bigger concern. In fact rifles and shotguns kill less people each year then Knives, Personal weapons (Hands, fist, feet) and clubs. Yet just under 1/2 or all murders are done with Pistols (and that may be more then 1/2 for several police departments just list firearm if someone is killed by any firearm instead of using the terms Rifle, shotgun or pistols).

Thus, if the restriction on background checks for private sales would be limited to Pistols, I see a lot less objections to it (Through a lot of weapons making would object, pistols are a profit center for them today, unlike the years before the 1960s when less then 10% of all firearms sold were pistols, that percentage is up to 40% today). This is the rule in many states, including Pennsylvania and it is working.

there are a handful of Senate Dems from pro-gun states that are up for reelection in 2014. An AWB is DOA in it the Senate.

each one is making their decision not on national polls but on whether or not their constituents want it. There are a bunch of Dems in the Senate from conservative pro-gun states - that is why an AWB is DOA in the Senate.
