Reuters' Matthew Keys indicted for conspiring with hacker group 'Anonymous'
By DYLAN BYERS | 3/14/13 4:39 PM EDT
Matthew Keys, a deputy social media editor at Thomson Reuters, has been charged in an indictment for allegedly conspiring with members of the hacker group Anonymous to hack into a Tribune Company website, the Justice Department announced today.
Keys, a former web producer for the Tribune Co-owned television station KTXL FOX 40, in Sacramento, Calif., was charged with providing members of the group with log-in credentials for a computer server belonging to the Tribune Co., according to the DoJ's press release.
"According to the indictment, Keys identified himself on an Internet chat forum as a former Tribune Company employee and provided members of Anonymous with a login and password to the Tribune Company server," the DoJ press release reads. "After providing log-in credentials, Keys allegedly encouraged the Anonymous members to disrupt the website. According to the indictment, at least one of the computer hackers used the credentials provided by Keys to log into the Tribune Company server, and ultimately that hacker made changes to the web version of a Los Angeles Times news feature."
"If convicted, Keys faces up to 10 years in prison, three years of supervised release and a fine of $250,000 for each count. The indictment also contains a notice of forfeiture provision for property traceable to the offense," the press release states.

(12,272 posts)Isn't that against their credo?
If they can't get anonymous they will go after anyone who associates with them.
Somehow I doubt this story.

(27,797 posts)If this guy, Matthew Keys, did provide login and password information to help Anonymous hack into the Tribune Company server, then he is in deep shit.
I wonder why he did it?

(7,403 posts)Has a still valid login and password. It had to be somebody else's login and password that still worked there, making this an inside job. Or a setup.

If convicted, he should face a penalty. But what he shouldn't face is the threat of an extremely disproportionate penalty designed to force him into a plea agreement.

(12,693 posts)Either you plead guilty, or the investigation will make your life a such a living hell that you wished you'd pled guilty. Very few people have the resources to fight a federal charge.

(10,597 posts)... after they hounded Aaron Swartz to death. I tell you what I would do... If I was truly innocent of the charge, I would not accept a plea deal. I would go to jail. No one, no where (short of water boarding ) could get me to admit to something I did not do. Period.
