Google’s Doodle Features American Labor Leader Cesar Chavez On Easter Sunday, Users Retaliate....

full Title: Googles Doodle Features American Labor Leader Cesar Chavez On Easter Sunday, Users Retaliate On Twitter
Googles Doodles on the Google.com search page dont frequently stir up too much controversy, but today many users are outraged by the search giants choice in featuring Cesar Chavez, an American farm worker, labor leader and civil rights activist. Of course, today is also Easter, which is one of the most observed and celebrated religious holidays for Christians around the world.
Users have taken to Twitter, expressing anger over the fact that the Doodle features the labor leader instead of a drawing honoring the holiday (Google search engine rival Bing did feature Easter Eggs on its homepage).
Why Cesar Chavez? In 2011, U.S. President Barack Obama proclaimed March 31 as Cesar Chavez Day. That being said, since the company frequently celebrates major U.S. and international holidays through the Doodles, it is a little bizarre that Google wouldnt include a Easter Egg-type of Doodle. But if you do a search of Google Doodles that celebrate Easter, it appears the search giant hasnt created an Easter Doodle since 2000.

Google Team,
I find that your Doodle of Chavez, a known corrupt {sic} and human rights violator, to be inappropriate and right down {sic} disrespectful. I have served this country as a member, commissioned officer, and civilian within the Department of Defense and State - upholding the traditions and values of this nation (United States) so companies and individuals, like your self, can prosper and live life to the fullest. Depicting a self-appointed regime leader that {sic} has committed so many violation {sic} towards the common person {sic} in Venezuela its not even funny. {grammar} Nor is this depiction of a person that would seen {sic} Google seized by his state, had you decided to upstart {sic} your search engine. I dont know if you are reading this or will read it as seriously as you should. By placing this up there and not any reference to Easter - or just leaving it blank sends a big slap in the face against all US Military members and those civilians that {sic} report to work and duty all over the world to ensure that you have the right to place something like Chavez on your search engine Doodle. I would like to be the first to say, Thank You for the disrespect and immaturity on your part. I understand that you heads of Google are anti-Christian and very progressive. Thats fine. You guys have that right - but its a right that was gained by men like me that left the comforts of home to place our lives on the line to maintain the way of life that this nation has enjoyed since the 1780s. People like Chaves {sic} do not need to be celebrated, due to the historical fact he did nothing but run his country in {sic} the ground. If you so hate the US and the Christian value system that made this country the way it is - then please - go to Cuba, Venezuela, or Iran and take your ideas and company with them and enjoy all the perks of the fascist regimes that they offer like minded individuals like yourself.
Good Day and Happy Easter - for a single man laid down his life - for all of us. The least you can do is not have put anything up to counter that.

(1,245 posts)I would also point out to this dipshit that:
1) The 'US Military' is NOT 'officially Christian', in fact the world's military's (including ours) are about the most un-Christ-like entities the world has ever known. Ergo the argument that the lack of an Easter observation is specifically anti-Military ... is ridiculous.
2) Iran does not even remotely belong in the same group as Cuba and Venezuela. The latter two are socialist, not fascist. THESE ARE THE OPPOSITE OF ONE ANOTHER, wingnuts. And none of these three countries have 'fascist' leadership. The government of the USA is far closer to the actual definition of Fascism, e.g. the merger of corporate and state power. Iran is a theocracy ... exactly what people like this poster appear to want the USA to be ...
3) Hugo Chavez was not 'self-appointed', he won numerous democratic elections.
I don't know how people this dumb can actually be among us, let alone in positions of authority (e.g. an 'officer').

(4,444 posts)seems like they can put up what they want... and that Chavez is an appropriate subject given that he was honored with a day.
Also, easter is a religious holiday. Why would a company that has little stake in the holiday market put themselves out there to alienate a large section of their user base? The reason there are easter eggs and rabbits in Walmart (in February) is not because they're so very righteous and Christian... they'd give them away if they were. It's because they make money on the holiday.
The more I think about it, the more I wonder how good Christians have been so quiet while their holidays have been co-opted by corporations. They're manipulated into buying by their faith and they don't care. They get angry when their emotions aren't played with to make money. It's actually pretty incredible.

But why do Christians always feel the world is picking on them? The Orthodox Church will be celebrating Easter in May this year.
And, another pet peeve of mine: why are so many stores closed on Easter? Not every one makes a big deal of this holiday and some of us want to do our usual Sunday chores or grocery shopping or what have you. But we can't, because the Christians run everything, despite their insistence that they are being constantly discriminated against.

Real actual Christians might remember that Jesus was concerned about the poor, the people Cesar Chavez tried to help. Irony is a bitch. (25,415 posts)It just kind of happened. My husband has been working at his church since he was 17 and he's in his 30's now. We have a nice pastor who is really inclusive. We have had women pastors fill in for him. We have children allowed to be children in the church. The church is part of the ELCA, which allows gay clergy. It's not a stuffy, ultra conservative church at all. If it was, I would never have gotten involved in that church. Plus, we live in Connecticut and there are just not fundies around here as much as other parts of the country.

Cesar Chavez is an example of Christ resurrected. When we follow Jesus' teaching and example, we are in the true sense resurrecting Jesus.
But don't expect ignorant fundamentalists to understand this obvious reality.
Google's Doodle's celebration of the resurrection of Jesus in the work of those who care for the poor, the sick and the imprisoned is impressive.

(546 posts)I don't see the incidental amusements of doodles as being worth such a serious degree of consternation.
Everyone knew it was Easter, advertizing it is not a tenent of the religion, and I appreciated being reminded of a good man like Mr. Chavez.
That is what doodles should do; remind us of things we forget, educate, and amuse.
I get tired of getting Christmas, Easter and other religious holidays used by the commercial establishment to make sales thrown constantly in my face. And these doodles are not even part of that which reminds us of the big things going on around us.
Google doodles are at their best when they amuse and educate, and remind us of smaller, but still important things.
