At least dozen people shot at Mother's Day second line

Source: WWLTV

NEW ORLEANS -- NOPD Superintendent Ronal Serpas says that at least 12 people were shot a Mother's Day second-line parade in the 7th Ward.

The youngest victim in the shooting was 10 years old.

Police say there were 200 people at the corner where shots rang out, and 300 to 400 people at the second line in all.

EMS took nine people to University Hospital; eight were suffering from gunshot wounds, while another was injured in a fall while escaping the shooting. Three of those victims who were shot are in critical condition.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_line_%28parades%29

Second line is a tradition in brass band parades in New Orleans, Louisiana. The "main line" or "first line" is the main section of the parade, or the members of the actual club with the parading permit as well as the brass band. Those who follow the band just to enjoy the music are called the "second line." The second line's style of traditional dance, in which participants walk and sometimes twirl a parasol or handkerchief in the air, is called "second lining." It has been called "the quintessential New Orleans art form — a jazz funeral without a body."[1] Another significant difference from so called "jazz funerals" is second line parades usually lack the slow hymns and dirges played at funerals (although this is not a hard rule; some organizations may have the band play something solemn towards the start of the parade in memory of members deceased since their last parade).

I personally consider turns of phrase like F U or STFU to be particularly toss-worthy because that form of leet speak evolved in order to bypass automated language censors (which DU does not use).

So not only are they rude, they are tailored to deliver the rudeness past features designed to prevent such rudeness, which makes them deliberately rude. I don't care what the subject matter is, when you go there you lose, period.

I can and do expect the same behavior of myself and everyone else here. There is a real damned good reason for it, which goes beyond mere comity. Left to itself, an Internet message board devolves to "FUK U H1TLER" in about twenty hours, faster if there is an army of people who are paid to make exactly that happen, given the opportunity. The people of DU have done a good job of preventing that by policing themselves.

Sun May 12, 2013, 09:17 PM
May 2013

If you mean that phrase broadly, it would seem that you're preemptively excluding all non-violent activities in your request for a list of non-violent activities.

In truth, I'd say that the vast majority of shooting sports and activities are non-violent in the sense of the word that really matters - most guns and most bullets fired are not aimed at a living thing.

(But if "violent" just means noise, smoke, flame, and recoil, then I agree that shooting is generally violent in that sense.)

used for violent purposes you've preemptively excluded all the non-violent uses, and then declared those uses 'violent' in intent (even if the people involved in the specific sports may not share or be aware of their own violent motives).

Even trap, skeet, and sporting clays are not "violent" in the harm-a-living-thing way, despite their (I assume) descent from hunting. And so when you add it all up, the vast majority of gun uses are not violent in any useful meaning of that term...

...for getting the right answer.
You can certainly make the argument that using guns for hunting has a measure of violence to it.
You can also make the argument that practicing for self defense has the possible end goal of violence, even if the gun is never used for self defense. But there are a lot of people who enjoy shooting guns for the challenge of target shooting. There is skeet shooting, trap shooting, sporting clays, and lots of rifle shooting contests.

A lesser reason for owning guns is for collecting them for their value and or beauty. Yes some guns are very beautiful.

As a Congressman, he sponsored Disaster Recovery Personal Protection Act of 2006 with Senator Vitter.

He's even gotten a good rating from Infowars hero and Ron Paul supporter Larry Pratt's GOA

Way too many thousands of stories every year of injury and death from people having guns sitting around for no damned good reason, or where they even want to hurt others... I approve of a rifle for hunting, locked up, but find no reason any human should have AR's or handguns. Fortunately, none of the people I hang out with have weapons other than a single shot rifle, and that's just 2 people out of a dozen.

Hammers can attack without any notice. They call fall on your head, they can hit your thumb, or drop on your foot. OUCH! We need laws to protect us from hammer heads. ASAP!

But Faux News just told us gun violence is DOWN! They wondered why nobody else was covering that. Making these gun victims a political football MSNBC and Obama. The GOP NEVER does that, no sir. Abortions are different you see. They never use abortions as political footballs, no sir.
Let's make abortions an Amendment right like the 2nd Amendment. Let's see how they like that shit.

72. How can parade-goers be killed by pools and household chemicals when they are watching a parade?
Sun May 12, 2013, 10:32 PM
May 2013

That's ridicules.

Besides what do swimming pools and household chemicals have to do with being shot during a parade? Neither are designed specificity to kill at at a distance, as guns are.

They spend a lot of time emphasizing other ways to die in their attempts to deflect any argument about guns.

Current favorites are pools and household chemicals, because cars wasn't working anymore.

Was this country like this ten years ago? WTH is going on that there are so many horrendous shootings.. i guess the answer has been, not as many guns, as there were ten years ago?

You are braver than I am! The clips posted on DU are enough to make you shake your head. Those to listen to people like Michael Savage or Glenn Beck.. and soak up every bit of the hatred they spew, are probably sitting there cleaning their weapons while doing so.
This country has gone off the deep end...and then you see about how the Police are going rogue.. at some point the pot has to boil over.. I can't run too far on the West Coast..there is an Ocean there!

Or don't have to hear too much of it by people around me. I think my heart would sink.. to hear it every day from people you work with or are around you. You would tend to wonder if the whole town, city, state and or country thinks that way. I love my city of San Francisco..but even we are losing some ground.. Progressive and Liberal radio here is slipping to become owned by the Right wing.. even KGO isn't the way it used to be.. When we Democrats lose our voice in a city like this... You know the erosion is great... and when people do and say things, that don't make any sense at all.. like how for example, its okay to allow people to starve in the streets... or to take kids school lunches away from them because its a waste of money.. You want to stand up and grab them and shake some sense into them. Of course today its dangerous to do that, as they might just STAND THEIR GROUND..and shoot you with a weapon.

I am sure its a mixed bag there.. We do have a lot of right wingers down in Southern California.. Orange county. Santa Barbara used to be a haven for Right wingers, but its moved to the left.. Still, San Fransisco is a pretty liberal Town, but many "fundies" have started to move here to "save us". If you go downtown and stand with the cable cars at Powell and Market Street, there are always a few trying to convert people there. (They don't know most are out of town visitors who want to ride the Cable Cars..)

Occasionally the SFPD are called in. People don't like it when someone gets in your face and tells you, you are going to hell. If they ever get aggressive its because they think no one is paying attention. Most know they are there, and don't want them in their face. Some of the preachers do get aggressive... and that's not good for the city or the tourist trade in the city.

Likely it was criminals settling a business dispute with each other and parade memebers caught in the crossfire. Probably already against the law for them to have guns.

Hope they get caught. Sympathy for the poor folks that were hit.

42. The Superintendent says they "likely worked together"
Sun May 12, 2013, 08:10 PM
May 2013

And the organiser is calling it a terrorist act:

Serpas said the three gunmen likely worked together, and at least two different weapons were used. One of the suspects is described as a man between 18 and 22 years old with short hair and wearing a white shirt and blue jeans, Serpas said.
...
The Original Big 7 Social Aid and Pleasure Club organized the second line and has held it on Mother's Day since 2001, according to Edward Buckner, the club's president. The parade started Sunday about 1 p.m. at the Original Big 7's home at 1825 Elysian Fields Ave.
...
"It's not because of the associated pleasure clubs that this type of terrorist act happens. That's not the type of crowd that follow us. We have people as old as 70, and as young as 5" years old who parade, said Buckner, adding that a shooting had never occurred at their Mother's Day second line before.

Sun May 12, 2013, 07:40 PM

No. No, no, no. I'm selfish when I take the last donut from the box. Someone's selfish when they eat their kids' Easter Peeps. Guys shooting at people, including 10-year-olds, are murderous, evil, psychopathic monsters. Selfish! Seriously.

and said, "I think what frustrates all of us is the selfishness of some people and I think what frustrates all of us is that the great culture of this city sometimes stumbles a bit because of the selfish behavior of some people." Yeah, kinda redundant. And like mass shootings can be compared to cutting in front of the line at the 15 ITEMS OR LESS grocery counter.

Law-abiding gun owners didn't cause this, and criminal gangs will ignore any gun laws. Gun controllers are like Bush invading Iraq, which didn't have anything to do with 9-11. Gun controllers can't do anything about violent criminals so they lash out at law-abiding gun owners.
