Casino owner Sheldon Adelson hit with $70-million verdict

LAS VEGAS – A Hong Kong businessman hit a $70-million court-awarded jackpot Tuesday when a jury agreed that he had helped the casino empire run by billionaire Sheldon Adelson get a gambling foothold in China.

This is the second time in five years that jurors have awarded consultant Richard Suen a sizable sum in the bitter dispute. A jury's 2008 finding for Suen was thrown out on appeal. Adelson's lawyers vowed Tuesday to appeal the latest verdict.

Suen claimed he was owed $328 million for lobbying mainland Chinese officials to grant the Las Vegas Sands Corp. a lucrative gambling license in Macau, the only place in China where casino gambling is legal.

Throughout the month-long trial, Adelson’s attorneys argued that Suen had not had effect on the company’s efforts to secure the license and was owed nothing because, despite his promises, he did nothing concrete to aid company executives.

I recall Rachel Maddow doing the math in figuring out how much 200 millions equated to in regards to his income and when broken down: 200 million was the equivalent of about 40 bucks to a person making about 50k a year.

70 million? that's less than 20 bucks to this guy.

Seventy Million Dollars . . . a lottery to 99.3% of us . . .doesn't even register with Sheldon Adelson.

I mean . . . how ridiculous is that level of wealth when 70 million dollars represents zero point two nine PERCENT . . . not 2.9%, but 0.29% . . . of your net worth?

And some of these apologists for the astronomically affluent are going to sit there and tell me that a 39% tax (which you KNOW he isn't paying) on their incomes is "punishing success"?????

Adelson has 20,000 million dollars. 70 million is 0.35 %. Based on my income, that is the equivalent of me giving up one bag of chewing tobacco for one month. I could survive that, I think.

Not to worry, people, Adelson will show it on his income tax return under cost of doing business and it will become a tax deductible item. Really dodged a bullet there.
