Man Fatally Shot in Head in Greenwich Village Investigated as Hate Crime: Police

Source: WNBC

Police are investigating the deadly overnight shooting of a 32-year-old man in Greenwich Village as a hate crime after detectives learned the suspect taken into custody at the scene may have made anti-gay remarks to the victim before pulling the trigger, authorities said.

Law enforcement officials say Marc Carson, who lived on West 131st Street, and a friend were near a 99 Cent Pizza shop on Sixth Avenue around midnight when the suspect, who was with two other men, hurled anti-gay slurs at them, Carson's friend told detectives.

Carson made some remarks in response to the suspect's taunts and walked away, law enforcement sources said.

A short time later, the suspect, who was by himself, confronted Carson and his friend again near a building on West Eighth Street, and words were exchanged for a second time, law enforcement officials said. Then the suspect allegedly pulled out a .38 caliber revolver and shot Carson in the face, killing him.

I wouldn't be surprised to find this happening somewhere else, like a small backwater TP-infested area, but in NYC? And in Greenwich Village?????

There's 1,619,090 souls on our island (I live up in Harlem myself), 8,337,000 in The City...and this SURPRISES you? Yes, we are far more tolerant than probably anywhere else in the world - which is why a guy yelling homo-slurs while shooting even makes the news. You think this would even get a third-page in Dubuque?

I'm serious - a random gay-hate crime getting press is a big freakin' deal, relatively.

That poor couple in the news a few weeks ago got the piss beat out of them in broad daylight. With due respect (IMHO) 3 isn't exactly random.

But even one a week for three in a row in a city of eight million...is probably statistically insignificant.

I'm not belittling this at all, hell, I'm thinking about joining Front Runners (even though I'm not LGBTQ, just F) - but in this town it takes a LOT to be a pattern. More than one a week for sure.

I'm not LGBT either, but I've worked in the arts most of my life and I have many good, kind friends who are being beaten up, prosecuted and denied rights because of who they chose to love. It makes me angry and sad to read these stories. Indeed it angers me that anyone suffers any persecution for who they are, who they love, the color of their skin or the place of their birth. It doesn't seem like we're evolving.

Have a peaceful night, my friend.

The corner where this occurred, 6th Avenue and 8th street, is a high traffic area that I have passed or crossed at least 5,000 times. Tonight I went out to dinner and walked down 8th Street. As I came to the corner I was on the other side of 6th and I saw lit candles and flowers piled near the door of a shuttered Barnes and Noble. I hadn't been online today and hadn't heard any news, and I thought, "What the heck is that?" As I crossed and saw the sign I just stood there with my mouth agape.

I really cannot believe this. And on the heels of an assault that took place against two gay men near Madison Square Garden a week or two ago. I have never felt afraid in NY, which may sound funny to some people. But now . . . I can't help but wonder if the acceleration of gay marriage acceptance in this country, with more states passing bills each week, has sent some people off the deep end. It's very scary.

They even had a mini-police station set up in Washington Square park, not too far from where this poor man was shot and killed.

Since overall crime has declined, so has the police presence. The West Village draws a lot of people from all over the city. It's the place to go, and that attracts assholes as well.

One anti-gay beating a week in two million people, even for three weeks in a row (other poster claims, probably true) isn't significant by any metric other than press coverage. Statistics may suck but they never lie

"Mr. Kelly said there had been a rise in bias-related crimes in New York City this year — 22 compared with 13 during the same period last year. In just the past three weeks, there have been five attacks directed at gay men, including a vicious assault on a gay couple outside Madison Square Garden on May 5."

http://www.nytimes.com/2013/05/19/nyregion/killing-in-greenwich-village-looks-like-hate-crime-police-say.html?_r=0

Edited to say...the NYT doesn't claim that, Ray Kelly does.

I'm sad this morning. First, the young woman accidentally shot by police while being used as a shield by perp, this story!!! When will it get better, I ask you. It seems to be getting worse. The guy in sack cloth in front of his cave with the sign reading, 'the end is near' is starting to look like an attractive alternative to all this 'news'. Geez.
