Gay marriage opponents stage mass protest in Paris

Source: The Guardian

Tens of thousands of people registered a final, furious protest against same-sex marriage on Sunday, days before the first wedding ceremony under a new law.

At least 150,000 protesters converged on Paris, marshalled by more than 4,500 police who were deployed after the government warned of a risk of violence and disruption.

Riot police evicted about a dozen far-right activists who used ladders to climb on to the roof of the Socialist party headquarters and unfurled a banner saying "Hollande resign".

The night before the demonstration, 50 people were arrested after chaining themselves to metal barriers they had placed in the middle of the Champs Elysées and firing smoke canisters. A van carrying masks, banners and smoke bombs was seized by police.

But but but...I thought only LIBERAL protests like OCCUPY WALL STREET carried such devices, not those moral conservative Christian evangelicals!

think a cheeseburger can ever be sophisticated, and that The Hangover is not vulgar, but merely a 'different' kind of culture.

Furthermore, college education in France is free/financed fully by taxpayer revenue.

But hey, let this outlying development set the rule for you.

And furthermore, I could call you out on your point because I remember some of your uglier contributions in years past when YOU weren't so sophisticated, educated, and cultured, but it would be against the rules.

Yeah, you're not going to get personal. Right.

Back when the Shrub was first elected, I thought the most effective way to proceed was to concentrate on civil unions at first. So did my father. If you want to think that that's ugly, I guess that's your right. But in my opinion, that strategy worked and paved the way for the move to marriage equality now.

The fact is, I'll take a cheeseburger eating American over a raging French homophobe any day.

One Hundred and fifty THOUSAND?...My God, you didn't see anything near that level of protest in

fucking IOWA when they legalized gay marriage, which was years before France did, by the way,

although it was eventually overturned.

Sorry, honey, you can pull out all the tired old "vulgar American" cliches you want -- they're no

more representative of Americans, generally, than the 150,000 who stormed Paris over Gay marriage.

As for my supposed "uglier contributions in years past", please DO list them, as I have no

idea of what you are talking about and neither, I'd bet, do you.

There are hundreds of thousands of muslims in Paris, if not more.
Anti-gay-rights and antisemitism are cornerstones of fundamental Islam.

Edit to add: please note I wrote Fundamental Islam.

the protestors. What silliness - "how do we know they aren't muslims?" LOL How do we know they aren't skinheads? How do we know they aren't Bolsheviks?

Yes, in the capital of one of the most Catholic countries on earth where a prime minister in the 90's referred to France as something like the 'Vatican's sister state', demonstrators are muslims.

You just crack me up.

From the article: 'Protesters from the anti-same-sex marriage movement converged in their thousands at the Invalides in Paris, while a more hardline demonstration led by Catholic traditionalists gathered near the Opera. Nationalist youth groups attended the latter demonstration, with one calling for a "national revolution".'

And they need to get with the times. And if the Muslim population have a problem with it, they have to realise they live in France, and accept how the system works.
