Bruce Dern wins best actor at Cannes for role in Alexander Payne's 'Nebraska'
Source: Omaha World Herald
Alexander Payne's "Nebraska" did not win the coveted Palme d'Or award Sunday at the Cannes International Film Festival, losing to "Blue is the Warmest Color."
But Bruce Dern won the best actor prize for his role in "Nebraska."
Here's the full list of films, most of which you probably haven't heard of, some of which you can probably see at Film Streams later this year:

My favorite Bruce Dern film will always be 'Silent Running'. He is one of the few actors to Kill John Wayne on film in 'The Cowboys'. The was fair. John Wayne killed him in 'The War Wagon'. Current photo with Laura at the festival below the 'Silent Running' photo.

(10,800 posts)Heath did a great job in that movie. But, Bruce was crazy in lots of movies. The man was known for his crazy.

Some old lady would kiss my four-year-old cheek and I don't even remember her name.

Back in the 90s, when the Rams football team was based at Anaheim Stadium and they
sucked donkey balls, my wife and I were gifted with a pair of tickets for field-level seats
at the 50-yard line. They were playing the New Orleans Saints and getting clobbered,
down 21-0 by the end of the first quarter.
I decided to grab some hot dogs and beer so I got up and proceeded to climb the steps
when I happened to catch a glimpse of someone a few rows up in an aisle seat that looked
really familiar. As I got closer, I could tell right away it was Bruce Dern, but he was in
total incognito, wearing a raggedy sweatsuit, shredded ball cap, mirrored sunglasses and
a really scraggly beard, obviously trying to enjoy a game without being harassed or noticed.
I got the grub, came back and sat down to tell my wife who was sitting just a few rows
up from us. She looked casually around and confirmed it was him.
By the third quarter, wed had enough torture and decided to bail out before the traffic jam,
so we got up and started to leave. As we approached Bruce, we both looked at him and
threw a furtive thumbs-up. He looked around to make sure no one was the wiser, then
gave us a huge grin and a double-thumbs-up for not blowing his cover. The Rams lost 44-6
One thing I know I'd recognize immediately is Dern's "huge grin."

I know a couple locals in the film. I didn't see her when she was here.

(28,257 posts)He's a fine actor who has established a long-term career, largely on the basis of playing unsavory characters. Nice to see him get some recognition.
And yes, "Silent Running" rocks.....
