Third Letter Sent to President Obama, Similar to NY Mayor Ricin Letters

A threatening letter was mailed to President Obama that is similar to two letters containing poisonous ricin sent to Mayor Bloomberg and his anti-gun group, officials confirmed Thursday.
The letter, first reported by NBC 4 New York, is being tested for ricin. It was received Wednesday at an off-site facility, and did not reach the White House, according to the Secret Service.
According to law enforcement sources, all three letters were postmarked May 20 in Shreveport, La. and sent without a return address or signature. Sources said the NYPD tried to pull fingerprints off the letter discovered at the city's mail sorting site, but nothing usable was found. Authorities also plan to check for any possible DNA.
It wasn't known if any viable forensic evidence was discovered on the letters sent to Washington or the White House. All three mailings read in part: "You will have to kill me and my family before you get my guns. Anyone wants to come to my house will get shot in the face. The right to bear arms is my constitutional God given right and I will exercise that right till the day I die."

(326 posts)Many hunters have and continue to speak out against the crap LaPierre keeps shoveling, the problem is that the media doesn't report it. There are over 100 million gun owners in the U.S. < 4 million NRA members. It's just not sexy to say "Majority of gun owners think NRA is full of shit." They would rather report on lunatics planning an armed July 4th march on DC. That gets more ears and eyeballs.

(95,247 posts)The whole 'law-abiding gun owner' line is in the same class as 'jumbo shrimp': the demands of their fantasy lives as heroic slayers of 'thugs' and resistors to 'tyranny' require them to adopt an attitude of 'bending the rules' and 'defying authorities' in the pinch when the gun is in hand. So their actual attitude to the law is not 'I will obey the law' but rather 'I will decide which laws I will obey', and yet still their own conviction they are righteous and law-abiding people allows them to feel they are not criminally inclined when they harbor the intent to break laws at will, and even to believe that they are not criminals when they actually break laws.

People should not be embarrassed about their propensities to violence; they should step to them, own them, and even cherish them --- they can be quite useful in the proper circumstances. But people who provision themselves with deadly weapons, and then try and pretend they harbor no desire to use them for their primary purpose, are simply laughable, and even more laughable when they imagine they can convince other people their comic denials are serious and true.

(3,731 posts)I've carried firearms for the majority of my life, not once did I ever harbor those fantasies, and I very seriously doubt that most firearms owners did also.
We could go on like this to the end of time, neither one of us will budge from our stated positions or beliefs, so, let's just respect each others opinions and call it good, ok? I'll even by a beer for you, enjoy.

(95,247 posts)Acknowledging harboring desires for violence remains a deep taboo, and further is a necessary part of the public line of the side of this debate you set yourself to uphold. People used to maintain with a straight face they bought Playboy for the articles, and I never believed them either.

I live twenty miles from the sheriff's office, and he only has one deputy and one car. We have wild animals here. I have no interest in the NRA or its wingnuttery.
I take exception at being lumped in with those who spout treasonous nonsense about overthrowing the government. (If the II Amendment were about tyrannical government as the wingnuts in the NRA claims, then why did the framers of the Constitution put a clause in it that calls making war on the government treason?)
The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)You own a weapon for self-defense, and yet have never imagined using it to shoot someone?
You would abide by any law regulating ownership and transfer of guns and ammunition that might be passed by the legislature and signed by the executive?
Do you vote principally on the issue of 'gun rights'?
billh58
(6,635 posts)they attempt to hide behind, and presume to speak for, the "all firearms owners" group as if they are as single-minded as DU gunners, isn't it? The only "group" acting irrationally are the incessant Internet single-issue "they're coming to take our guns" NRA parrots. Polls have shown that most rational gun owners in this nation support sensible gun control.
There are about 15-20 (I haven't bothered to take an actual count) core Gungeoneers on DU who can be counted on to show up on any thread mentioning guns, to relentlessly repeat the same old NRA-slanted statistics and propaganda. It's sad, but highly entertaining.
The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)Is how often their basic line is that laws regulating sale and possession of guns will not be obeyed, and not be obeyed by the very people they stoutly maintain are 'law abiding gun owners'. In other words, they acknowledge my point, and agree with my statement that 'law abiding gun owners' are in fact ready and willing to break the law, though for reasons that remain obscure, they do not acknowledge that claims to be law abiding are obviated by this willingness to break laws.
billh58
(6,635 posts)contradiction stems from the same logic which allows Gungeoneers to espouse right-wing, Libertarian positions on a Liberal Democratic discussion site, and yet loudly proclaim themselves to be Democrats.

(12,072 posts)Yes, I strongly support RKBA and have a CHL (Concealed Handgun License) and routinely carry when I am our and about. That does not mean that I want to shoot someone, but am prepared to defend myself if needed. I have two fire extinguishers in the house and one in the trunk of each car, but that doesn't mean that I consider myself a fireman. (However, I have twice used the car fire extinguishers when I happened, by pure luck, to be at the right place when needed.) If I go my life without ever having to defend myself with a gun, I will be happy. I have retreated from a situation that was starting to look like it could go bad, and am still glad I left.
CHL holders, as a group, have far lower rate of criminal convictions that the general public, in the state of Texas. http://www.txdps.state.tx.us/rsd/chl/reports/convrates.htm There is no reason to believe that any other state has a different experience if their requirements for CCW are similar.
The Magistrate
(95,247 posts)There is nothing really to engage in the rest of this.
A fire extinguisher is not a pistol.
A person who considers it necessary to go armed at all or nearly all times perceives the world in so distorted a manner that his judgement cannot be trusted, and the likelihood he can be reached by reason is vanishingly slim.

On the flip side, it just might be easier to find the gunners in LA who know what ricin is, and can spell it. That should eliminate a large percentage of potential suspects.
