ST. LOUIS Heavy rain over the past several days has spurred a second round of spring flooding in Iowa, Illinois and Missouri.
Authorities in St. Charles County, Mo. urged residents of West Alton to evacuate Monday night after Mississippi River waters overflowed a temporary sandbag barricade, reports CBS St. Louis affiliate KMOV-TV.
Warning sirens went off in West Alton at 8:30 local time, signaling residents to leave. At least 300 were affected by the imminent danger that West Alton would be flooded.
Across the Mississippi, in Alton, Illinois, spillover flooded the riverfront and roads near a Con Agra plant. The Argosy Alto Casino was closed due to high water and was expected to remain so until Thursday.
The Mississippi reached its sixth-highest level in St. Louis on Tuesday as water continues to rise in the area, KMOV reported.
"Every Mississippi River gauge in our area is having a top 4 to 6 crest on record," said KMOV meteorologist Steve Templeton. "The river is cresting now for Grafton-Alton-St. Louis."
