Illinois Democrat proposes to cut down on military camouflage duplication
Source: Washington Post
A Democrat in Congress says he will propose a measure Wednesday to cut down on duplication in the U.S. militarys camouflage uniforms requiring the services to share one camouflage pattern, instead of the 10 in use now.
Rep. William Enyart (Ill.), a freshman, said he thought of the idea after reading a Washington Post story last month.
The Post story detailed how, before 2002, all branches of the military shared the same two patterns: a green one for the woods and a brown one for the desert. But since then, individual services have all produced their own patterns, with varying degrees of success. The Air Force, for instance, created the Airman Battle Uniform, but then decided it was not a good idea for airmen in Afghanistan to wear it in battle. They wear Army camouflage instead.
Congress needs to exercise its oversight to make sure we dont do silly things in uniform policy, Enyart said in a telephone interview Tuesday.

This is like total surrender to the terrorists.

(135,425 posts)It was initially jarring to the eye when they first started changing the uniforms; now it's more ingrained, but there are too many patterns--we need to pick one and stick with it.

(66,409 posts)I mean, it just got crazy with all the patterns. The USMC has a camo pattern with the globe and anchor as part of the pattern. I'm sure this got started under B*sh; giving away million-dollar contracts to corporations for unnecessary duplication of uniforms purely for the $$$.
I hope this gets passed and President Obama signs it.

(66,409 posts)You're right. That one has been around forever. I'm talking about the camo pattern designed specifically for the Marine Corps in which the globe and anchor are part of the repeating camo pattern. The newspaper article specifically mentions this as being a recent thing.

(1,589 posts)there was a move to make everything universal. The joint strike fighter, the joint services lightweight integrated suit technology (JSLIST) chemical protective suit, universal vehicles and equipment. Then the army made a new uniform that sucks. Marines had theirs. The navy uniforms are a joke. The airman battle uniform? yeah its a 'bad idea' to wear it in combat, its camouflaging value is ZERO. It was never intended to be worn off of an AF base. It has been a cash cow for someone...
the army is going to change thier pattern again...bad news is that since the OCIE/field gear has such a long life compared to a uniform, the new pattern has to be 'compatible' with the UCP we wear now. Which is like tying one hand behind your back before a fight.

(4,734 posts)... had the coolest camo pattern. Tiger stripe jungle camo. (there was a summer and fall version.)
the light summer version.... very rare....

(594 posts)With all the uniforms that are needed for all the military, having only 10 patterns should have very little impact on the costs. I wish congress would go off and find something important to discuss.

(299 posts)I know the taxpayers paid my salary for all those years, but I paid for all my uniforms with salary money over the years. I bought at least 40 pairs of camouflage uniforms over 23 years as a Marine even in recruit training (deducted from the final paycheck). I hate when the facts aren't out about who pays for what.
