Source: KATU Portland
A Tigard businessman is finally home with his family after being stuck for a month in the North African nation of Tunisia.
Jamal Tarhuni and his attorney landed at Portland International Airport on Tuesday afternoon, even though the FBI told him in January that hes on the federal no-fly list.
... Tarhuni belongs to a Portland mosque that has been under scrutiny by federal investigators in years past.
... Even after he landed at PDX, he ran into roadblocks from government officials. Customs agents confiscated his cell phone and camera. Tarhuni said they did not provide an explanation.

(2,190 posts)Can't they see that we need the good will and support of American Muslims, particularly those willing to work in places like Libya if we are to have good relations with Muslim countries.
(Good relations with Muslim countries like Libya would be a very good thing to have to put it mildly.)

(16,903 posts)very paranoid. We are fear-driven. I see it every day on Faux News, this is how they control their ignorant viewers.
I cut the govt some slack in these matters, because Homeland Security, etc. are privy to things that the rest of us aren't.
I'm afraid (pardon the pun) that this has become our reality. I will not let it change me, I will continue to feel as sunny and positive as possible, and yet will damn Bush/Cheney for what they did to us every day for the rest of my life.

(135,425 posts)Back in the McCarthy era on through the firing up of the Cold War, the feeling was similar--everyone was on guard, we could be nuked at any moment, duck-and-cover, Better Dead Than Red, etc., etc.
The only thing that changes is the Monster Under The Bed. We still haven't quite figured out how to convince people to not fight over stuff. One day, I suppose!

When I was a little child, I was also afraid of the Monster under the Bed. Specially the one in the closet, it took years and years before I understood that it exist no monster under the bed - and no one in the closet..
Now, when Im grown up I do not belive in monsters - and I can sleep in a dark room.. But I know i exist enemies out there, who want to kill anyone who dosen't comfort to their wiews of the world..
But as an grown up, I act in a way, where trolls and monsters are not there, and the reality is that it also exist few real enemies also.. They are few and far more easy to spot than we belive..
But why create enemies where you don't have anyone?..
