Washington Warns Snowden May Only Travel to the US (Jay Carney WH Spokesman statement)
Source: http://www.eluniversal.com/nacional-y-politica/13
The White House warned on Monday that former CIA staff Edward Snowden may not be allowed to travel to any other country but the United States.
The US Government keeps in touch through relevant diplomatic channels with all countries Snowden could travel across or choose for his final destination, said White House's spokesperson Jay Carney, EFE reported.
Carney's statement has been the first official US reaction after Nicaragua, Bolivia, and Venezuela recently offered Snowden asylum.
Carney further explained there were sufficient legal arguments for Russia to expel Snowden to the United States, despite the lack of any extradition bilateral treaty

Golly gee, why did that happen? Even the Official Mythology of 9/11 acknowledges implicitly and sometimes explicitly that the US first fucked the Middle East for 50 years. It's miraculous, for example, how the Vietnamese never acted to pay back on US soil even one one-millionth of the carnage the US committed on their country.

(24,979 posts)And by far most of these bombs are "our" bombs. Paid for by US taxpayers.
Stop bombing everywhere and you'll be amazed at how quickly the threats will disappear. The other trick would be to stop building these terrorist threats in the first place, as the US intentionally did with the Islamic jihadists, and still does when it's considered useful.
But we'll leave that out and just hope you get the obvious point. Are you really this blind to which country kills and terrorizes and intervenes and manipulates by far the most outside their own borders?
Thinkingabout
(30,058 posts)Either. I keep abreast of current events, I even realize there are terrorist not representing a country who wants all the world to believe as they do but it will not happen to me. I will be alert of my surroundings and contribute what I can to halt destruction and death. You sound like someone who does not like any actions of government but I think it is here to stay.

The countries that are arranging safe passage and sancuary for Snowden are just going to laugh and thumb their noses. What's Obama going to do...shoot the plane down? Really? Any idea how that act might play in the rest of the world? The US would have zero, zero, credibility if we did that.

(9,893 posts)it would probably be better if the administration forgot the word "Snowden" completely and moved on. They are looking powerless and turning him into a martyr. 30-year-old pursued by a big bad world government. It's turning into an action movie, and if this were a movie, we all know who most people would be rooting for. Seems to me if they do manage to get Snowden back they are going to have a REALLY big problem on their hands.

(53,339 posts)MR. CARNEY: Well, let me say that the United States has been in touch via diplomatic and law enforcement channels with countries through which Mr. Snowden might transit or which might serve as final destinations for Mr. Snowden and weve made very clear that he has been charged with a felony, or with felonies, and, as such, he should not be allowed to proceed in any further international travel other than travel that would result in him returning to the United States.
So all of our consultations through the appropriate channels have included that basic message. And that has been true, as weve said all along, in our conversations with the appropriate Russian authorities that while we dont have an extradition treaty with Russia, we believe that there is a strong legal justification for Russia to expel Mr. Snowden, and given that he is wanted here on felony charges, that he should be returned to the United States.
Now, we have a very important relationship with Russia and, as the President has said and others have said, we believe that this is not something that should negatively affect our relationship with Russia.
It is something that we are pursuing through the normal channels here -- diplomatic and law enforcement channels. And Im not going to speculate about outcomes that we hope dont come to pass, because we believe that the case is very strong that Mr. Snowden has been charged with felonies and needs to be returned to the United States.
Q: There have been diplomatic contacts to each of those countries from the U.S.?
MR. CARNEY: The State Department would have answers about which specific contacts have been made with which countries, but I think that we have been having contacts through diplomatic and law enforcement channels with all of the countries that might serve as transit points or final destination points. And obviously that regards -- that includes countries that have been identified as having received asylum requests.

(9,893 posts)what gives the US government the power to tell a person where he can travel outside the US. So if Joe Zillionaire from his retirement home on Bora Bora wants to fire up his private jet, fly it to where ever Snowden is, pick him up and fly him to Venezuela, with the relevant countrys' permissions (and by relevent I mean where he has to land and where he will deposit Snowden), the US can say no?
"should not be allowed" is not the same as "may only."
askeptic
(478 posts)Do you think this is how we tell countries what we want them to do? In a press conference? This is all to show those they propagandized into Snowden-haters that they are going to be tough.
Funny thing is, this is one of the most impotent statements they've made yet.

(3,818 posts)I ask because the day he flew to Russia, I was flipping through the channels trying to find out what was going on. I think they even broke in on CBS Sunday Morning about it, and one of the, ahem, "major" channels said that Snowden got off the plane was put on an embassy van and sped off from the airport. That's the reason I ask if there really has been any sightings of him at all at the Russian airport.
Now, if he did get away the day he landed, who's to say where he actually is? The van could have sped across the concourse or to another airport and put him on another flight out of the country, two weeks ago, and he is sitting somewhere in Iceland, LA, etc.
So - has there been any actual pics of him actually there at the airport?
