Obama would consider Ray Kelly to replace Janet Napolitano

Source: Politico

President Barack Obama thinks Ray Kelly has done an "extraordinary job" as New York's police commissioner, and would consider him as a candidate to replace departing Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano, he said Tuesday.

Obama told Univision's New York affiliate that he plans to put together a group of "strong candidates" for the job and that Kelly would be one if he's interested in leaving his current position. "Mr. Kelly might be very happy where he is, but if he's not I'd want to know about it, because obviously he'd be very well qualified for the job," the president said.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) said he called Denis McDonough soon after Napolitano announced her departure on Friday. Rep. Peter King (R-N.Y.) also voiced his support for Kelly.

The comments came in one of four interviews Obama conducted Tuesday with local Spanish-language reporters.

Ray Kelly blasts Obama administration over stop-frisk stance

Police Commissioner Ray Kelly tonight blasted the Obama administration for recommending a monitor to oversee the NYPD’s stop and frisk program.

“It is disappointing, quite frankly,” Kelly said following a graduation ceremony.

Kelly said he’s known Attorney General Eric Holder for some time and was stunned by his last minute intrusion into a controversial federal court case that could force the NYPD to make sweeping changes to stop and frisk.

“We were not given an opportunity to address the issues that they supposedly had seen,’’ Kelly said at St. Gregory The Great on the Upper West Side, a school he attended as a child.

He called the “11th hour, 59th minute” court filing by the Justice Department “unfair, unnecessary,”

NYPD under Kelly is out of control. He is absolutely not the man to lead the national police state agency.
