2 leftist farm activists killed in southern Mexico, 1 missing
By The Associated Press August 6, 2013 1:10 PM

ACAPULCO, Mexico - Two leftist activists were found shot to death on Mexico's southern Pacific coast and a third is missing, a local leader said Tuesday.

The two men were found with their hands bound and gunshot wounds to their heads Monday near Coyuca de Benitez, a town west of Acapulco.

The Emiliano Zapata Revolutionary Agrarian League said victims Raymundo Velazquez Flores and Samuel Vargas Ramirez were members of the group, which was founded by leftist guerrilla leader Genaro Vazquez in the 1960s.

League leader Luis Olivares said a third activist from the group has been missing since Monday.
They had been involved in efforts to obtain greater government support for farmers, and in building support for the Mexican Communist Party.

The deaths follow the killing of an environmental activist last week in the Gulf coast state of Veracruz.

That area has a lot of really nasty cartel violence. nt geek tragedy Aug 2013 #1
It also has a decades (if not centuries) long tradition of violence against peasant organizers. Comrade Grumpy Aug 2013 #5
Lots of potential suspects, virtually no chance of catching the murderers. nt geek tragedy Aug 2013 #6

The mountains of Guerrero and Oaxaca have sheltered various guerrilla armies over the years, and the Mexican military has been up there for a half-century or so.

bad. His head will be found in the middle of some road somewhere as a warning. It really is fucked up in Mexico, Lots and lots of violence over drugs, marijuana mostly and cartel power. If it was decriminalized here and allowed to grow here in private plots a lot of the demand for their product will dry up. Maybe lessen the violence. Communist and cartels? Don't know too much of that end of their politics.

The cartels are no longer getting as much money from drug trafficking, so they are turning to extortion and kidnapping to supplement their income.

I've seen them executing rival cartel members, male and female. These are some vicious, mean and evil human beings.
