Republican lawmaker pulls son from class over California transgender law

Source: Associated Press

A Republican state lawmaker says a new California law allowing transgender students to choose which restroom and locker room they use is part of the reason at least one of his sons will not return to his local public school this fall.

Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, who lives in the Southern California mountain community of Twin Peaks, described his family's decision in a column published on WND, a conservative website.

... Donnelly, who is exploring a bid for governor next year, said he is hearing concerns from a growing number of parents across the state. Some of those parents have told him they also plan to remove their students from public school, although he said the parents he has spoken with have declined to speak publicly about their decision.

Donnelly's comments Friday came as two conservative groups opposed to the law, the Sacramento-based Pacific Justice Institute and Capitol Resource Institute, filed language for a ballot referendum with the state attorney general's office seeking to repeal AB1266.

. . . at least if the poor child's parents are right wing morons who will teach him that climate change theory is junk science and that gay therapy is not.

Democrats hold a supermajority in each house. The Republicans can't even go home in order to prevent the legislature from conduction business for lack of a quorum.

How's this working for California? The budget is balanced for the first time in years.

That term ("yet another [term]) is offensive to many on DU and not considered acceptable in a post. If you leave it, chances are you will find your post hidden and that's not a good start to DU.

Welcome.

Words rarely offend me.

That said, in a community such as DU, it is helpful to have some consideration for the feelings of others, rather than allowing your personal perspective to color everything you say.

You come across as arrogant - and very insecure, since you need to use what I suspect you think are insults to get your point across.

Unfortunate, but not uncommon.

He's also a gun-humper who was arrested for carrying a loaded gun to an airport. Whenever I see his name in the local CA political news he's always parroting the latest Fox News/Drudge/talk radio POVs.

"Donnelly told The Associated Press on Friday that his 13- and 16-year-old sons, who attend Rim of the World Unified School District in the San Bernardino Mountains, were "horrified" to learn they might have to share a restroom with female students."

Wow, this guy really has drilled quite some ignorance in his kids. But at least he's doing LGBT kids in CA a service by removing his homophobic bigoted kids from school. Sure these parents may be nutty to you but hey we gotta thank them for removing prospective bullies from public schools! Right???

never mind that they would not have been sharing a restroom with girls , do thy have separate facilities at home?

they're being taught hate, hate that will in future make their lives increasingly difficult, just like those that taught their kids to be racists in 1960's

hopefully the kids will be able to overcome their upbringing and being used as political pawns by their Dad

others do their duties in the school bathrooms. I guess he thinks his kids will be peaking under and around stalls, watching others in urinals, on the john and what not, so he has to get them out of there. He clearly has some strange perceptions about bathrooms in schools. Wonder what he did as a kid?

She said I had NO idea of the implications. This is going to SPREAD nationally... and it is BAD.

My daughter is a friend of the assemblyman who sponsored the bill, so (for some reason) that made my mom want me to convince my daughter that this law is a travesty... and that she shouldn't support it. I mean, it is already signed into law by the governor, but my mom doesn't even want my daughter to support it in her own mind. (Of course, the rest of our family supports it, too, so not sure why my mom isn't leaning on us.)

My mom was unhinged. They must have really been whipping up the hysteria on Fox (she listens to Limbaugh and Hannity on the radio, too). My mom is 82. This will have ZERO effect on her life. (Which is pretty much the effect it will have on anyone else's life, too, except for those whose lives have been made harder due to the LACK of these protections.)

These rightwing TV and radio scoundrels are nothing more than scam artists preying on the elderly. It's depraved.

My mom and I live in different parts of California... and this law is consistent with school policy already in place in several California districts, in addition to being consistent with the policies of the organization overseeing high school athletics in California:

<<Several school districts already have policies that mandate the kinds of access specified in the bill, including the Los Angeles Unified School District and the San Francisco Unified School District....

The organization overseeing high school athletics in California already has a policy for transgender students who want to play sports on teams that conform with their gender identity. The bill would be in line with that policy, said Roger Blake, executive director of the California Interscholastic Federation.

The policy reads, "All students should have the opportunity to participate in CIF activities in a manner that is consistent with their gender identity, irrespective of the gender listed on a student's records.>>
