Five asylum seekers feared dead in latest Christmas Island boat tragedy

Source: Melbourne Herald-Sun

A desperate navy rescue saved about 100 people on board the vessel, but the Australian Maritime Safety Authority revealed several people are likely to have drowned.

"Information received from survivors indicates that up to five people remain unaccounted for. After an extensive search of the area for further survivors or bodies, none have been sighted, it is therefore believed any people unaccounted for have gone down with part of the vessel," an AMSA spokeswoman said.

There were thought to be at least 105 people aboard the ship which overturned 120 nautical miles north of Christmas Island throwing the passengers and crew into the sea.

Two people rescued were treated for minor injuries.

Several friends of mine have made that trip from Afghanistan to an illegal boat to Australia. It's very dangerous, and will continue to get more dangerous, unfortunately.
