NRA keeps database of gun owners and potential members: Report
Source: AFP
A new investigative report says that the National Rifle Association collects and maintains an expansive database of information on gun owners. BuzzFeed contributor Steve Friess reports that the NRA keeps the stockpile of information at its national headquarters in Virginia and that it goes well beyond the groups estimated 3 million members.
That database has been built through years of acquiring gun permit registration lists from state and county offices, gathering names of new owners from the thousands of gun-safety classes taught by NRA-certified instructors and by buying lists of attendees of gun shows, subscribers to gun magazines, and more, Friess writes.
Defenders of the policy note that the NRA is a private organization and therefore its efforts to collect information on gun owners is not a contradiction to its opposition to a government mandated gun ownership registry.
Its probably partially true that people dont know the information is being collected, former NRA lobbyist Richard Feldman told BuzzFeed. But even if they dont know it, they probably wont care because the NRA is not part of the government.

I've been saying this for years. Gun nuts give their info to the NRA. The NSA collects it from them.
Idiots.

(5,376 posts)After several "hey, he's still dead" responses, complete with their ugly literature stuffed into the return envelope they had to pay for, I was ready to give up. Then I got their "give to us or kiss your 2nd amendment rights good bye" plea for money right after Trayvon Martin was killed. I copied a photo of Trayvon, on which I wrote "This beautiful young man is dead because of YOU, NRA idiots", I circled and red-penciled every stupid "fact" in the "letter" they sent, countered it with my own facts, stuffed all the documents into their envelope and returned it--postage paid by them, of course. I've not heard from the NRA since, so looks like they at last removed my brother's name from their list. Not sure what list I'm on, my actions could come back to bite me, but I sure felt better!
Just for the record, my brother and I had nothing in common, in fact hadn't spoken in over 20 years. As his only surviving family member, it was incumbent upon me to settle his estate, which was a real mess to clean up. Never was sure why he hated me so much, but I gotta smile, knowing how much he'd have hated that I stepped in and took care of things. Needless to say, NRA and Gun Owners of America never got a dime of his money.
