Huge sinkhole swallows tree in US state of Louisiana

A massive sinkhole that has been swallowing up land and trees in the US state of Louisiana is being monitored by authorities as it continues to grow.
Homes in the area are not in danger, the Assumption Parish Office of Emergency Preparedness said.

The right type of earthquake could cause ground sinkage as well.
But CA is not underlain with either saltdomes, or limestone - the geology needed for big sinkholes.
