US Says It Won’t Let Diplomatic Paralysis Slow Action Against Syria

WASHINGTON The Obama administration said Wednesday it would take action against the Syrian government even without the backing of allies or the United Nations because diplomatic paralysis must not prevent a response to the alleged chemical weapons attack outside the Syrian capital last week.
New requests for the United Nations to authorize military action in Syria may have complicated the Obama administrations plan to take retaliatory action on the purported poison gas attack east of Damascus that U.S. officials claim was carried out by President Bashar Assads forces.
But a State Department spokeswoman said possible U.N. rejection of the U.S. plan most likely led by Russia wont slow the administration.
We cannot be held up in responding by Russias intransigence continued intransigence at the United Nations, Marie Harf said. The situation is so serious that it demands a response.

Quaint, I know.

perhaps what ever party in Syria used chemical weapons should have used White Phosphorus , 'cause then by American standards it would have been okay or is it only okay when we do it?

USA Great Britain and Saudi think its OK to use these on people
The CBU (Cluster Bomb Unit) is a weapon developed by the United States for anti personnel purposes.
The weapon contains 665 BLU-26 tennis ball-sized submunitions, each designed to detonate with 600 metal fragments for an anti-personnel/anti-materiel effect.
These canisters weigh more than 1000 lbs . Out of 665 maybe only 80% will detonate on contact. The rest kind of "Lay Around". They will KILL YOU if you pick one up and it decides to detonate. It will also blow your hand and maybe your arm OFF
United States and allies attacked Iraq with 13,000 cluster munitions, containing two million submunitions during Operation Iraqi Freedom, according to the HRW At multiple times, coalition forces used cluster munitions in residential areas, and the country remains among the most contaminated by this day, bomblets posing a threat to both US military personnel in the area, and local civilians.

(42,239 posts)Syria crisis: MPs to vote twice before direct UK action.
MPs will have two votes before "direct" military action is taken by the UK in Syria, the government has proposed.
A Commons motion, to be debated on Thursday, states the second vote should be held after UN inspectors report on an alleged chemical attack.
Labour had threatened to withdraw its support for the motion and said the PM had "changed his mind" under pressure.
Asked if ministers had backed down, the foreign secretary said it was necessary to proceed "on a consensual basis".

(15,374 posts)Prez O, although I wish that he would tone down ALL war talk completely.
According to this information, which may be out of date, Marie Harf, the person described as a "State Department spokeswoman" in this article, is listed as "Media Spokesperson for the Central Intelligence Agency, a position she has held since June 2008. Ms. Harf is part of the small team that develops the Agencys media strategy and responds to queries from reporters on a wide range of national security and intelligence topics." She may have changed agencies. Or not.
Per the same source, Ms Harf began as "an analyst on Middle East leadership issues from March 2006 until June 2008. In this role, she produced finished intelligence products -- including for the Presidents Daily Brief -- on top foreign policy priorities, providing both insight and context while identifying risks and opportunities for the United States. She also authored in-depth assessments of foreign leaders, which were shared with U.S. officials before bilateral and multilateral meetings." http://www.cnas.org/node/5044
Having cut her teeth on the misbegotten foreign policies of Dim Son & Co - which worked so well - she continues to sow the same bitter seeds.
Every single one of these Bush II legacies should have been removed from their federal posts. Unfortunately, they have now become entrenched. No wonder we are hearing the "same-old, same-old" warmongering talk.
