Man brain dead after Union Square rampage

Source: cbs.com

A man allegedly went on a rampage in Union Square on Wednesday afternoon and left a complete stranger brain-dead in the process.

Police said that the attack may have been a hate crime.

Jeffrey Babbitt, 62, was minding his own business as he walked through the crowd near the chess boards in Union Square when a man made a hateful announcement and began his rampage, witnesses said.

“He said ‘the next white person who walks by I’m going to [expletive],’” one woman said. “His fist went in and the man’s head bobbed and he hit the ground and you could hear his skull hitting the ground.”

check out the video and the comments

I live in a real melting pot of an area and our crime rate is pretty low and we all try to help each other out because it's a poor area. However, some areas give me a real case of the willies, especially the McMansion district where all the Republicans live. Those people garden their spite.

My dad's dying wish was that I move into a better area. My own idea is that I'm already there, thanks, with good neighbors and plenty of amenities in one of the most convenient parts of town.

Hate crimes don't surprise me no matter which way the bigotry lies. They always do sadden me.

This rampaging jerk's life is over along with Mr. Babbitt's. It's a waste.

Just coming back from there. Where are the... you know... like, people?

The streets are so clean you can eat off them. ( No I didn't ---- but one could, if one wished.)

And doesn't anyone have children? If so... what do they DO with them?

Gorgeous town..... but it's like a movie set. Too pretty to live in.

I worked there for a few years, left about 8 years ago.
It was crowded, difficult to drive in, people everywhere, and some parts did not smell very good, to put it mildly.

Toward the north end of town ... near GG Bridge. Lombard Street, and ( I think) Union Street are the main drags. ( I believe some folks call it "the Presidio" also.)

It's Tourist Town... w. motels and hotels out the wazoo... but also block after block of what look like impeccably designed middle-class, one-family homes, attached. Plants in front. No lawns. No bikes, no garbage cans, no dirt.

A movie set, in short.

On the small business streets there are stores w. apartments above them. Even those are weirdly neat and clean. I'm assuming that's where the yuppies live. There's a lot of yuppie-type nitelife, so I know there are actually people there.

One theory I've hatched is that the really old pre-1900 type construction ( which for instance still exists all around NYC, for example) got wiped out in the 1906 earthquake and what's there now is simply newer, better-built housing.

I've been to other parts of SF... years ago... that were not so pristine, so I know what you're talking about. And I avoided unnecessary driving because I'd likely get lost and I need the exercise (walking) . That said: the traffic seems much less obnoxious in SF than is the case in LA, for example. ( Now that's scary stuff.)

He is from Cal and grew up in Riverside/Orange County.
Now, after 8 years of living here in Mayberry, he returned looking nerve wracked. The traffic and noise were overwhelming, he says.
and he says Mayberry never looked so good!
(Our idea of a traffic jam is 3 cars in front of us.)

I left when I realized that I was becoming the kind of person who didn't see the homeless people lying in my path, the kind of person who averted her eyes and stepped around them. It was the most depressing place I've ever been.

I only say this, because I think that some people think a story like this should NOT be reported because it may be "racially divisive." I think it's important that incidents of assault, particularly when straightforwardly motivated by some group-based animus, should be reported and discussed.

Damn shame about this poor man, and I hope his killer DOES get charged with a hate crime, AND receives a stiff sentence.

With that said, though, I REALLY do wish those morons and douchebags posting these racist comments on here would get a fucking clue. No, Obama is not conspiring to destroy white people, and no, most black people are NOT crooks. Seriously.....WTF?

R.I.P. Jeff Babbitt. You didn't have to die this way. ='(

Edit: On second thought, it wasn't approved, I guess. WTF, CBS-NY?
