Tokyo wins race to host 2020 Olympics

7 September 2013 Updated 20:22 GMT

Tokyo has been chosen to host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games ahead of Istanbul and Madrid.

The Japanese capital won a majority of second round votes from the International Olympic Committee members in Buenos Aires to beat Istanbul.

After tying with the Turkish city in the first round, Madrid was earlier eliminated in a tiebreak by 49-45.
More to follow.

This is the worst Olympics decision in the history of the IOC...Tokyo??? Less than 100 miles away from an actively melting down nuclear reactor complex???

On the plus side, they will save a ton of money at the opening ceremony because no lights will be needed to see the glow-in-the-dark parade of nations...

It is not downwind from Fukushima, as the prevailing winds in the reactor area blow from the ocean towards the northwest, making life uneasy for the people along the path of those winds, but having minimal effect on Tokyo itself. The current ambient radiation readings throughout Tokyo Metropolitan Prefecture are running about 1/30 the average radiation readings in Denver, Colorado (roughly 0.04 microsieverts per hour in Tokyo versus 1.3 microsieverts/hour in Denver).

Salt water rotting away pipes and who knows when the next earthquake will hit.

And experts estimate in the best case it'll take 30 years to get a handle on things:

By 2020 we may be seeing more of the effects of the Fukushima meltdown. I hope it all goes well, but the ill effects may be worst than Chernobyl in time.

Does anyone think we are getting the truth about Fukashima, the Gulf, or how rapidly global warming is approaching? It's bad enough to live off the Pacific as it is. I stay away from sea food ever since the Gulf spill. Does anyone think a big industry like the fish market is going to tell the truth? A lot can happen between now and 2020, we might not even be here or Japan for that matter.

BP has spewed their propaganda and aired so much TV, radio, Internet, and newsprint that they would NEVER write about the truth. They secretly buy up all documentaries done about the spill and its affects. Sea life is starting to disappear like in Prince William Sound. They have shafted many of the victims and not addressed many more. Screw BP and all of these greedy bastard companies!

The IOC already fucked up once recently by giving Sochi the 2014 Winter Olympics. I also don't buy the fact that things will be ok for the 2020 Olympics. A severe to moderate earthquake in the area could make the situation worse.

Tokyo now joins the ranks of Athens (1896, 2000), Los Angeles (1932, 1984), Paris (1900, 1924) and Lake Placid (1932, 1980) as cities that have (or will have) hosted two Olympics. And London has hosted the Olympics three times (1908, 1948, 2012).

And an interesting tidbit-- the 1940 Olympics were scheduled to be held in Tokyo, but were cancelled due to the war-- just as the 1916 Olympics, scheduled for Berlin, were also canceled due to a war.

Until 1964, all Olympics (summer and winter) had been held in either Continental Europe or an English-speaking country. Since then, Olympics have been held in Asia 5 times (6 counting 2020). The 2016 Olympics will mark the first time for them to be held in South America.

The air in Tokyo has 1/30 the radiation of Denver, Colorado. But you can always wear a surgical mask if you're paranoid about the air.

And the water is quite safe.
But you can always buy imported bottled water.
