Yellowstone Shooting Death: 3-Year-Old Girl Allegedly Shot Herself With Handgun

Source: Huffington Post

YELLOWSTONE NATIONAL PARK, Wyo. -- Yellowstone National Park officials are investigating after an Idaho woman reported her 3-year-old daughter shot herself with a handgun in a campground.

Park rangers responded Saturday morning to Grant Village Campground, but resuscitation efforts failed, resulting in what officials said was the first shooting death in the park since 1978.

Park spokesman Al Nash said Sunday that part of the campground remained cordoned off while park rangers and special park agents conduct the investigation. He said he didn't know where the girl's body was taken.

"We don't have all of the information, and we haven't drawn any conclusions," Nash said.

It's apparent that the rangers aren't equipped to investigate shootings there.

Congress says let the murder and mayhem begin.

is a bad combination. One reason I quit camping in campgrounds (there are others as well) but I got into a nasty situation in Wyoming a few years back, and that was enough for me. I don't like drunk rednecks with guns, turns out.

the term "redneck" is racist!!
I've been told here at DU that I can't use it. Nor the word "cracker"--
still waiting for someone to
give me a PC word that won't get their panties in a wad.

It's almost as if being killed by a firearm in this country is considered dying of natural causes.

Here is a link about the increase in crimes in the National Parks after the gun ban was revoked by Senator Coburn's amendment.

http://www.politicususa.com/2013/09/08/gops-handguns-yellowstone-amendment-claims-3-year-victim.html

This clearly demonstrates that the reason the gun companies push all these rules is to increase crime which makes people more afraid and therefore more likely to buy guns for self protection which increases crime in a never ending vicious cycle. The gun industry is quite astute in marketing. More clueless consumers being sucked in to the consumer culture. The gundamentalists are no different than the silly ladies who buy the latest fashions each fall. It is mindless consumerism.

Perhaps more importantly, the number of homicides rose from just three in 2009 to fifteen in 2010, a five fold increase.

From 2002 to 2006, there were 14, 8, 13, 17, and 11 murders in America's National Parks.

I wonder why they would ignore those equal or higher death totals prior to the new gun law? Can't imagine they would omit data to support an agenda.

And have any bullets for that gun stored elsewhere. This was the rule as to rifles and shotguns before Firearms were permitted into the Federal Parks. i.e. it was legal to have rifles or shotguns if they were unloaded AND stores in a trunk of a car or other similar location (i.e. no easy access).

The rule was simple all firearms had to be "rendered inoperable and packed, cased, or stowed when their travels took them through a national park".

That is not that hard to do. In bolt action rifles (and most automatics) it is easy to remove the bolt. Pump action are similar. Double barrels can often be broken down in two halfs (Stock and barrels). Most revolvers can have their cylinder detached and automatic pistols can have their bolt removed.

The problem arises only if you want instant access, as opposes to the one to two minutes it would take to assemble the weapon and load it. Given the nature of national parks the old rules were better, you could still have a weapon if you went into a park, but you just could not use it quickly.

Another gun. And then someone guards that one, and someone guard the other ones. While someone goes out and gets more beer.
