Controversial author named to UNC-TV board

Published: September 9, 2013 Updated 4 hours ago

The Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. — A Greensboro author who is a critic of same-sex marriage and has written an article calling President Barack Obama a dictator has been named to the UNC-TV Board of Trustees.

The North Carolina Legislature approved Orson Scott Card's appointment to the board in July.

Card told The Associated Press that he was asked to join the board and agreed to put his name up for a seat. He said he supports public television.

"UNC-TV does a fine job of serving the people of North Carolina and I want to be of any help that I can," Card said in an email.

The statement did not mention his column in Greensboro's Rhinoceros Times earlier this year suggesting Obama "is, by character and preference, a dictator," and saying he might train urban gangs to do his bidding.

1. Huh, I had no idea Orson Scott Card is a whack job!

I read Ender's Game in high school and enjoyed it. It was one of the more creative SciFi novels I've read. That's extremely disappointing the author has such extreme (and irrational) views...

States run their own public broadcasting companies, just as they run their own elections. Oregon Public Broadcasting is excellent and reflects the values of the people here, just as North Carolina's hate soaked culture is reflected by the way they run their public TV. The people of NC will not even protest this hate monger.

All legislative session, NC's Capitol in Raleigh was the scene of Madison-style protests against the teabaggers every week. Hardly the product of a "hate soaked culture".

actors told Card and company to shove it, they were stuck with Ford, a man whose contract sometimes dictates how many paces he will step from dressing room to set. All about the money for Ford, who says he does not care about the anti gay stuff, because he's not gay!
They had to use the right wing Ben Kingsley because Will Smith told Card to get stuffed as did other African American actors. Card is aware that his book is lily white and he wanted to make his work seem less like the work of a huge multi pronged bigot but Will and others would not play the game.
Ford will wear the role like someone else's suit and his delivery will be as energizing as his narration of Blade Runner.

He didn't want to do it, but the execs forced it (no doubt with a giant sack with "$" on the side) anyway:

Ford was, and continues to be, pissed: "When we started shooting it had been tacitly agreed that the version of the film that we had agreed upon was the version without voiceover narration. It was a fucking nightmare. I thought that the film had worked without the narration. But now I was stuck re-creating that narration. And I was obliged to do the voiceovers for people that did not represent the director's interests."

"I went kicking and screaming to the studio to record it," he reportedly said.

And of course Ridley Scott never even imagined it in the film. If you like sci-fi I strongly suggest you watch the 2007 "Final Cut"; it eliminates the narration and undoes some other edits, and restores the movie to its rightful place as one of the best futuristic dystopian films ever.

you pretty much saw the whole story.

Also, I don't care how "incredible" it looks, or is, not one penny of my money goes to to Card. Actually, I wouldn't watch it for free.

Card is not only a virulent homophobe, but a racist and misogynist as well.
