World Cup-bound USA men beat Mexico 2-0

Source: Denver Post

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The United States clinched its seventh straight World Cup appearance, beating Mexico 2-0 Tuesday night on second-half goals by Eddie Johnson and Landon Donovan before a raucous red-white-and-blue-clad crowd that stood and chanted from start to finish.

After withstanding Mexican pressure for the first 20 minutes, the U.S. settled in the match and got the breakthrough in the 49th minute when Johnson outjumped defender Diego Reyes to meet Donovan's corner kick 8 yards out and head the ball past frozen goalkeeper Jesus Corona.

The younger guys like Mix need minutes and we don't want another Gooch situation where a key player goes down in a meaningless game ...

We have enough depth on the team to play the bench. The key players need to stay healthy for the Cup.

I knew it wasn't held annually, but also didn't think it was every 4 yrs like the Olympics. I could've used the "internets" for more information, but knew I'd get a straight up answer in no time from another DUer.

Soccer is the metric system of sports. Everybody does it except us. Although that's changing.

Have you noticed how right-wing blowhards HATE soccer? That's one more reason I like to see us doing well in it.

Case in point - I used to run into Henry Kissinger at Giants Stadium back in the late 70's when the Cosmos played there.

Because I was a pre-teen at the time and didn't know anything about him, I hadn't yet developed the urge to punch him.

Not to nitpick, but the word "football" originated hundreds of years ago and was intended to distinguish sports played on horse (eg, polo) from those played on foot. So, technically, even baseball players are "footballers".

ETA:
From Shakespeare's King Lear, Act I, Scene IV:
Osw. I’ll not be struck, my lord.
Kent. Nor tripped neither, you base football player.

Klinsmann is doing a great job.

Mexico was in disarray - they had just fired their head coach....they definitely don't look good right now, will be a miracle if they make it out of qualifying!
