Toronto police officer found guilty of assaulting G20 protester
Published: Sept. 12, 2013 at 3:57 PM

TORONTO, Sept. 12 (UPI) -- A Toronto police officer was found guilty of assault with a weapon in the arrest of a protester at the 2010 G20 summit, court officials said.

Judge Louise Botham said the officer, Constable Babak Andalib-Goortani, was "not entitled to use unlimited force to effect an arrest," the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. reported. Thursday.

Government prosecutors had argued the officer had "lashed out" at protester Adam Nobody during a demonstration June 26, 2010, in front of the Ontario legislature.

Nobody was tackled by police. Prosecutors said Andalib-Goortani hit Nobody with a baton after he was already on the ground.

Andalib-Goortani said he administered the blow because Nobody was resisting.

G20 cop trial: Adam Nobody had water bottle full of ethanol

Const. Babak Andalib-Goortani is charged with assault with a weapon, trial delayed

TORONTO — Prosecutors and defence lawyers for a Toronto Police officer accused of assaulting a man at the G20 protests three years ago appear to agree the man’s red water bottle is a key to the case.

In a three-page “agreed statement of facts” introduced Monday at the start of Constable Babak Andalib-Goortani’s trial, all the lawyers signed off on a paragraph which reads: “Adam Nobody dropped a red water bottle behind the police line. Police saw him drop it and seized a red water bottle.”

Forensic tests later showed the liquid inside was composed of ethanol, water and a trace of toluene, and was easily ignited.

While police considered it a flammable liquid, Mr. Nobody is expected to say his red bottle contained only whiskey and water for drinking.

There was a guy named Sammy Yatim in Toronto acting threateningly on a streetcar with a knife, all of the passengers and the driver got off and the streetcar was then surrounded by at least 20 police officers and a police officer shot at him 9 times with 8 of the shots hitting Yatim and THEN when he was DOWN that is when they used the taser on him.

Video half way down the linked page.

I think we have a new product we are exporting to the North. But at least they are charging the cop, we'll see how far that goes.

Not a single police officer to my knowledge has ever been punished for assaulting protesters in the states in recent years, even though there have literally been hundreds, if not thousands of times it's happened.

... a cop could eat a live baby on TV, claim it was "resisting" and the stupid fucking juries in this country would let him off.

The Toronto G20 was giant debacle. Lots of people assaulted by cops who removed their name badges, collusion by the cops not to identify each other, over 1100 people kettled and detained after their constitutional rights were quietly subverted by provincial govt beforehand. There's been zero accountability for this exercise in pushing the boundaries of how far law enforcement can go.

But even once is more than happens here. Our cops have been caught lying under oath about protesters they falsely arrested, and not a single thing was done about it.
