Prince William Retires From Royal Air Force
Source: Huffington Post
There will be no more perilous military helicopter missions for Prince William in the rugged mountainous terrain of northern Wales.
With the military's announcement Thursday that he has completed the operational phase of his career, William looks free to spend more time with his wife, Kate, and their 2-month-old son, Prince George, while he takes on more royal engagements and charity roles.
The move marks the end of an exciting phase in the prince's life he became adept at piloting a Sea King helicopter in foul weather, helping mountaineers in distress and rescuing mariners in the frigid waters of the Irish Sea. His active military career, a traditional rite of passage for senior royals, lasted more than seven years, first in the Army and then in the Royal Air Force.
Air Chief Marshal Andrew Pulford said William had been an important part of the Royal Air Force's search and rescue force for the past three years.

I would have liked the option to retire after 7 years of work .... and do charity work

(2,749 posts)He was born into this life. He can't just decide to go out and become a copper if he wants to, live in some 4 floor walk-up flat in London with his wife and kid. He will be king one day, a Constitutional monarch. His job at this point in his life is to prepare for the role he will eventually take on. So stuff the bitterness because you would trade places with him (or his wife if you are a woman), in a New York minute.

(11,936 posts)I applaud him for not only doing a 7 year stint in the military, but showing character by doing actual important work while serving.
Both princes seem like good guys.

(20,805 posts)...and something tells me he wouldn't have minded another couple of years as a rescue pilot, but with a wife and young 'un at home I don't blame him for making the choice.
I think that flying a rescue helicopter has got to be infinitely more fun than opening Hospital wings or day-care centres..
