WHAT A TRIP: TIMOTHY LEARY'S FILES GO PUBLIC IN NY...
Source: AP
[font size="1"]In this circa 1961 file photo provided by the New York Public Library, a curled-up Timothy Leary reads a book. Leary saved thousands of documents, correspondence and writings relating to his scientific research into psychedelic drugs in the 1960s, much of it never published but now available to scholars and the public at the New York Public Library, which purchased the collection in 2011 from the Leary estate. NEW YORK (AP) A trove of Timothy Leary files, much of it previously unpublished, could shed new light on the LSD guru, his controversial research into psychedelic drugs and the emergence of the '60s counterculture.
The New York Public Library, which acquired the vast archive for an undisclosed sum from the Leary estate in 2011, is making the material available for the first time Wednesday to scholars and the public.
The archive "is the missing link in every attempt to piece together an account of research into Timothy Leary and the emergence of scientific research into psychedelic drugs and popular drug counterculture," said Denis Berry, a trustee for the Leary estate.
Leary, who coined the phrase "turn on, tune in, drop out," was one of the most polarizing figures of the counterculture. He advocated the therapeutic use of psychedelic drugs including LSD and psychedelic mushrooms. Allen Ginsberg, Abbie Hoffman, Jack Kerouac, Aldous Huxley and other noted figures frequently visited Millbrook Estate in upstate New York where Leary continued to conduct his psychedelic experiments after being fired as a psychology lecturer at Harvard University...

(40,416 posts)I ate a ton of my very limited bandwidth to find that out.
The purpose of my post was to post that specific song, not just any Moody Blues.
Here are the lyrics (I hope):
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
Timothy Leary's dead.
No, no, no, no, He's outside looking in.
He'll fly his astral plane,
Takes you trips around the bay,
Brings you back the same day,
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Along the coast you'll hear them boast
About a light they say that shines so clear.
So raise your glass, we'll drink a toast
To the little man who sells you thrills along the pier.
He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back firmly on the ground.
He flies so high, he swoops so low,
He knows exactly which way he's gonna go.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
He'll take you up, he'll bring you down,
He'll plant your feet back on the ground.
He'll fly so high, he'll swoop so low.
Timothy Leary.
He'll fly his astral plane.
He'll take you trips around the bay.
He'll bring you back the same day.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Timothy Leary. Timothy Leary.
Timothy Leary.
I'll try one more time here. If this doesn't work, people will have to Google it themselves.

(40,416 posts)I apologize for putting up a bad video. But given that you posted one that was totally out of context of the OP, I'll call it even.
The Moody Blues song I tried to post is the only one they recorded about Timothy Leary. It's called, "Legend of a Mind".
Sheesh!

(40,416 posts)The whole point was to get "Legend of a Mind" into this thread. Not just any old Moody Blues song.
Now do you understand?
Bed time. It's late.

(40,416 posts)Let me spell it out to you so that you can understand. I won't use too many large words, I promise.
1. The original post is about Timothy Leary.
2. The Moody Blues recorded a song about Timothy Leary in the late 60's entitled "Legend of a Mind". I posted the lyrics up thread. You might take a couple of minutes to review them.
3. I thought that a video of the Moody Blues playing that song would be good in a thread about... Da Dahhhh! Timothy Leary. So I attempted to post it here. I was not attempting to post "Tuesday Afternoon" here because it did not fit with the thread's theme, TIMOTHY LEARY!
Now. Do you get it? Maybe we both need some sleep. Or maybe you are being deliberately obtuse. Regardless, I am done with this thread. I have tried my best.
The song is entitled "Legend of a Mind". If you can figure out a way to get a better recording of that song into this thread I would be much obliged.
Thank you and I am buh-bye.

(9,688 posts)I don't see anything that could benefit by excoriating Leary, for being associated with studies that are of scientific importance.
Or perhaps there is some kind of other agenda.

Always recommended to read Leary, more than just listen to rumors and gossip about him.
It makes a big difference. The man was a much better intellect than many give him credit for being...
I chose this one thinking maybe the slideshow would add interest.
This thread is, after all, more about Uncle Tim (err, Dr. Leary) than it is about the Moody Blues anyway.
Edit to add: It does have a problem with one channel of the stereo dropped, which is particularly bad because the "No, no n-no, he's outside..." parts are barely there at all. Ah well, fill then out in your head, those that care will know it anyway. Or find a better version. I have to have the volume way down because of sleeping family members.

(7,051 posts)It's unfortunate his legacy is often reduced to buzzwords and cultural stereotypes. Someday, reflexive contempt for 60s counterculture will dissipate and his work will be recognized for the genius it is. The release of this archive seems like a step in the right direction.
