GOP lawmakers oppose gay marriage in court filing

SANTA FE, N.M. —Nearly two dozen current and former Republican legislators are urging New Mexico's highest court to declare that state law prohibits same-sex marriage.

An Arizona-based group called the Alliance Defending Freedom filed a friend-of-the-court brief with the state Supreme Court in a case that could resolve whether gay marriage is legal in New Mexico. Monday is the deadline for submitting written arguments to the court.

At issue is an Albuquerque judge's ruling last month that it's unconstitutional to deny marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples. At least eight county clerks are issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

The Supreme Court plans an Oct. 23 hearing in the case.

The GOP lawmakers said anti-discrimination protections in the state constitution do not provide a legal right to marriage for same-sex couples.

WE have an idiot GOP tea party gov. and a lot of stupid religious people from the NW and SE part of our state. It embarrasses me when they act like the bigots that they are. I know we border Texas but we don't have to act stupid like it rubbed off.
