Republican hard-liners block strategy to avoid federal government shutdown

Source: Washington Post

Washington stumbled toward a shutdown as the Republican Party’s rebellious right wing on Thursday blocked a strategy by House Speaker John A. Boehner for navigating a series of deadlines to keep the government funded and avoid a first-ever default.

Boehner (R-Ohio) and his leadership team revealed the first step of that plan to rank-and-file lawmakers early Thursday, urging conservatives to shift their assault on President Obama’s health-care law to the coming fight over the federal debt limit.

That would allow lawmakers in the meantime to try to reach an agreement on a plan to fund federal agencies into the new fiscal year, which begins Tuesday, and avoid a shutdown.

But about two dozen hard-liners rejected that approach, saying they will not talk about the debt limit until the battle over government funding is resolved.

Unfortunately, the corporate media is working overtime in trying to set up a false equivalency between Republicans and Democrats as Republicans threaten to trash the economy unless they get their wish list. Rarely is mention made of prior compromises made by Democrats. Instead, the corporate media lets Republicans push the idea that Democrats are being unreasonable it not yielding to their extortionate demands.

not knowing that the Republicans are, every one of them, assholes who are causing this totally needless anxiety.
I don't see why Dem's don't understand what an advantage this gives them!

Fuck them! Fuck them all! Our problem isn't to answer to assholes like that, our problem is to seize our advantage.

I don't see why I hear Dem's bitching and whining about the R's and the MSM and everything being "against them", when they in fact have a definite and potentially lasting political advantage.

I just can't fucking understand why Dems aren't seizing the moment, but are instead whining about the Reps.

The shutdown will make people think twice about voting for the repukes. Granted some will face painful existence for a while but the 1%ers will also face problems with reduced business, decreased cash-flow and inability to get passports renewed etc.

The last shutdown doomed Gingrich and the crowd while Clinton shone. Let them shoot themselves once again!

Houses -- and by large majorities -- in Nov. 2014. This will shut up the Repubs. for
some time, and, hopefully, get the Tea Partiers thrown out altogether. These are
an unruly, crude, ignorant and primitive lot.

I only saw one report that said that the House passed bill sent to the Senate front loaded 100% of sequester cuts into the 2 1/2 month extension. All I have heard regarding the Senate bill is that the language defunding Obamacare has been stripped out and it only extends spending authorization to November 15th, which means the same dance tune will be playing again in a little over 6 weeks from now. But I have heard nothing regarding the treatment of the sequester. One has to assume that the controlling legislation is still the 2011 budget bill the set up the sequester in the first place. While there has been non-stop talk on the subject there has been almost no news on what is actually in any of the measures being proposed other than the treatment of Obamacare. So do a little digging MSM and tell us what is going on regarding the treatment of the sequester. Will the air traffic controllers again start being furloughed since the bill to transfer money from airport construction to salaries for the air traffic controllers probably expired at the end of the fiscal year and does the frontloading language remain in the bill.

That ties the hand of Boehner because a defection of just 25 Teabaggers means Boehner has a majority of Republicans but not a majority of the House. It makes it similar to a filibuster and is the cause for the House being dysfunctional.
