Government Shutdown Blame Would Fall On Republicans, GOP Seen As 'Spoiled Children': Poll
Source: Huffington Post
Most Americans would blame congressional Republicans rather than President Barack Obama for a shutdown, and many Americans view the GOP as acting like "spoiled children," according to a CNN/ORC International poll released Monday.
Forty-six percent of respondents would blame congressional Republicans, 36 percent would blame Obama and 13 percent would blame both. Sixty-nine percent said that the GOP is acting like "spoiled children" in the budget fight, while 58 percent think that of congressional Democrats and 49 percent think that of President Barack Obama. Six in 10 respondents reject the GOP's approach and think it is more important to avoid a shutdown than to make major changes to the Affordable Care Act.
The poll is an indication that the Republicans' hard-line approach does not resonate with many Americans, and could have consequences in future elections. Nevertheless, the GOP has touted the tactic of using the continuing resolution to fund the government to demand changes to Obamacare, crafting the populist slogan "Make DC Listen."
The government will not remain open past Monday if Congress does not approve funding to keep it running. The House passed a short-term funding bill Saturday with a repeal of a medical device tax and a one-year delay in the implementation of Obamacare. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has said that he will reject that approach when the Senate convenes later Monday.

(10,716 posts)and I will be "excepted" from the shutdown, so it won't affect me. However, just the hassle of wondering "what next" and "how does this affect my family" on the part of our military family is very bad publicity for the GOP. I look forward to the next election, as do others, I'm sure.

So please, please be mindful of 2014. Democrats need to win that. I understand speculation on 2016, but I can't stress enough the importance of 2014.
Have to point out as much as possible how badly they mangled things.

(57,936 posts)rule that prevents a majority in the House from passing a bill unless a majority of Republicans backs it. How does that work? Under the Hastert Rule as I understand it, Boehner cannot bring a bill to the floor unless a majority of Republicans wants to vote for it. Can you think of anything less democratic with a small d?

(575 posts)can see right thru the repuks plan. They have no intention of delaying anything
on ACA.. They want more time to try and kill it.. Tea cruz wants more tv time!
I don't want any delay for this law. If we shutdown... It will be the Republicans
shutdown.. They have known this all along. Mitch McConnell needs to stop worrying
about a reelection and all the money RW's they are collecting from donors in the meantime...
Do your job and pass a CR and debt ceiling increase.. Mitch is dead either way he goes...
Oh well... he made his bed I say!

(57,936 posts)The problem is that the Republicans have a rule that Boehner can't bring a bill to the floor for a vote in the House unless a majority of Republicans support it. So you can't pass a bill proposed by a Republican or Democrat if it has total Democratic support and, say 18 Republican votes.
You have to have at least a majority of Republicans favoring passage. That means deadlock. No compromises. It's death to progress.

(31,233 posts)President's. They were semi successful the last time they did this. Their numbers are always in the toilet, and they don't seem to mind how they're viewed nationally, it's why they take these stupid risks. However, any Republican with national ambitions, has to know this is a fiasco in the making.
