Police: Tenn. man had loaded rifle in bag at JFK

NEW YORK (AP) — Police say a Tennessee man has checked luggage containing a loaded, defaced rifle at New York's Kennedy International Airport.

Keenan Draughon (DRAW'-guhn) was arrested Saturday morning trying to board a flight to Charlotte, N.C., after Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police found the weapons. Police spokesman Joseph Pentangelo says Draughon also had high-capacity magazines, which are illegal in New York.

U.S. Transportation Security Administration rules allow only unloaded weapons in checked luggage. No weapons are allowed in carry-on luggage.

Pentangelo says the serial numbers on two rifles were defaced. He says Draughon was also carrying two handguns in his checked luggage.

The 23-year-old Clarksville man was being held pending an arraignment. It wasn't clear yet whether he has a lawyer.

7. Up to 5-10 years for the federal law of knowingly possessing an altered or

obliterated serial number, I believe. Putting a loaded firearm in checked baggage probably could come with charges as well.

The state laws may not be technically applicable - although NYC has a tradition of disregarding federal law on firearms transport - but I wonder if FOPA covers magazines and accessories as well as firearms. I.e., is it protected to carry a large magazine from one place to another where it would be legal, but passing through a jurisdiction where its possession would be prohibited? This guy might be a nice test-case of that, if he wasn't already a double-jackass...

3. Among the things you DON'T do at JFK...

That is one hardass airport...security in NYC, and at JFK in particular, is tough. They have an anti-terrorism unit of the NYPD that you just DON'T mess with. This guy has got to be one dumb customer...he was prolly trying to exercise "mah second amendment rights!"

back from Belgium--pre 9/11 and spent some quality time in a back room there.

11. Christopher Dickey's book "Securing the City" is quite eye-opening about tha anti-terrorism

unit. They are a crack unit and in some ways have the FBI beat in their operations, causing some strain between the two. I didn't fly out of there much until 2005, when I started traveling to Europe once or twice a year, since I was retired. I recently flew to Montreal out of Bradley in Hartford-Spingfield and it seemed much less tense. That said, I always watch my step at JFK, cuz I kinda "get" why they must be that way at JFK...

6. I was getting ready to deplane from an international flight at JFK back in 2008 when the world's

biggest and meanest looking NYPD cop got on the plane, mad as hell, yelling at a trembling flight attendant and heading for someone in the plane. I guess he had a warrant for somebody's arrest and the attendant had let everybody get up and start deplaning. Later I asked my son who is a prosecutor in Brooklyn what could have been the reason...he thought it was probably an arrest warrant, perhaps a bench warrant...

I was hoping it was some kind of international spy thing or some drug kingpin and would be in the news...but alas...not...

If this were a hunting rifle and he forgot to remove a shell from the chamber, you MIGHT be able to say it was an honest mistake. Still not excusable, but dumber shit has happened.

But guns with the serial numbers rubbed off? Not even a chance this was an "honest mistake" on his part.

Gun runner, pure and simple. A very stupid gun runner at that. Thankfully he won't have to pay rent for the next 5-10 years; the Fed is going to give him a nice cozy cot to rest his head on.

A Tennessee man was arrested at Kennedy International Airport on Saturday as he was checking in and officers discovered two pistols and two rifles, painted silver and purple, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police said.

The man, identified as Keenan Draughon, 23, of Clarksville, Tenn., was charged with criminal possession of a weapon, said Joe Pentangelo, a spokesman for the Port Authority police. Mr. Draughon was booked on a flight from New York to Charlotte, N.C., and possibly planned to fly back to Tennessee from there, Mr. Pentangelo said, adding that it was not clear why he was in possession of so many guns.

Two of the weapons, both 22-millimeter rifles, were painted, one silver and the other purple, and one had a serial number that was unreadable, Mr. Pentangelo said. The silver rifle was loaded, he added. In addition to the weapons, Mr. Draughon was also carrying several high-capacity magazines, Mr. Pentangelo said.

It was unclear whether the weapons were acquired in New York. Under most circumstances, New York City law prohibits visitors from bringing firearms into the city even if they are legally licensed in the visitor’s home state. Federal Transportation Security Administration rules state that passengers can transport firearms only if they are unloaded and locked in a hard container. All firearms, firearm parts and ammunition must be checked.
