FBI reportedly scales back Lopez killing inquiry

Source: THE PRESS DEMOCRAT

The FBI is not conducting a full, independent investigation into the death of a teenage boy who was shot by a sheriff’s deputy last week, but instead offering local police “support,” several local law enforcement leaders said this week.

The stance is an apparent reversal from the bureau’s notice last week, when its agents told command staff at the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office and Santa Rosa Police Department that the agency would conduct its own investigation of the Oct. 22 shooting death of Andy Lopez, looking for potential violations of federal civil rights laws.

Meanwhile, the lawyer representing the Lopez family filed three claims for unspecified damages against Sonoma County on behalf of each of the boy’s parents, as well as Andy Lopez’s estate.

Arnoldo Casillas, an attorney with Moreno Becerra & Casillas, said the family will file a federal lawsuit today in San Francisco over the shooting and that it would hold a news conference Monday to discuss details of the suit.

Well here you have it folks - The FBI investigation is a "Rubber Stamp" and the "Details" of the investigation (as by Calif State Law) will never be released to the public.

So next time you hear 1 of the 2nd Amendment Types defending the cop saying "I'll wait the report to come out". He probably already knew it would never be released

we should use "bluewash" to describe the "investigations" into police-committed murders.

impression that the FBI would be conducting a full independent investigation by the FBI. By the pro-police manner in which the local press has covered the story, it appears that the local press may have contributed to the misimpression.

The falseness of the claim that the FBI would be conducting a full independent investigation was only uncovered when other local law enforcement leaders revealed it.

District Attorney Ravitch said:

“My understanding is simply that they’re here for support but not actively engaged in an investigation,” ... “The only investigations currently occurring are the sheriff’s review for their own internal affairs and the criminal investigation being conducted by the Santa Rosa Police Department.”

After such disclosure, Police Chief Schwedhelm added
"the FBI’s involvement, at whatever level, “doesn’t change what our role in the investigation is.”

“We wouldn’t hesitate to ask for assistance if need be in this type of investigation,” he said. “At this point, the investigation is continuing and we’re not ruling out any offers of help or assistance. I am confident that our investigation will get all of the facts as to what occurred.”

The kid had a toy gun. A plastic one that was shorter and weighed less than a real AK-47. He was walking near his home and wasn't threatening anybody. Some will blame the kid. Or his parents. Or society in general. Anybody except the shooter and the officials in the Sheriff's Department.

Maybe it would otherwise be helpful if the police departments would stop approving of the actions of cops who treat the general populace as the enemy.

Maybe it would help if they didn't whitewash the police actions and give false impressions that police actions will be independently fully investigated.

if the 13-year-old shot the cops?

Because, as we all now, teenage boys never shoot anyone ever.

Sure, studying both side-by-side while sitting at your computer, but how about when you're on patrol? After dark? With it pointed at you?

Looks a hell of a lot more real than this one, which caused a massive lockdown at Alfred University in 2008 and damn near got somebody shot:

The point is this: You don't fuck around with an AK. Those rounds will punch through anything but heavy ceramic plate armor (which the top tier still won't take more than 4 hits or so), as well as car doors (even the custom Kevlar-armored Crown Vics Ford used to sell).

This Wanna Be Rambo trained other cops in recognizing weapons

Will at least he tried to pretend he was training other officers in threat recognition. In reality he was unofficially lowing the standards set forth by the US Supreme Court for Justifiable Shootings.

Just like you don’t always see the whole animal when hunting, you may not always see the whole weapon – or even a lot of it – in low light. Look for the parts.

Are you trying to justify this killing?

Is merely holding something that looks like a weapon an offense punishable by summary execution? Cops get paid to risk their lives; maybe he could have waited half a second to ensure he wasn't gunning down an innocent kid.
