The Washington Times and Sen. Rand Paul on Tuesday "mutually" agreed to end his weekly column after he failed to properly cite material and appeared to lift entire sentences, including in one article that appeared to borrow extensively from Forbes.
"We expect our columnists to submit original work and to properly attribute material, and we appreciate that the senator and his staff have taken responsibility for an oversight in one column, Times Editor John Solomon said.
We also appreciate the original insights he has shared with our readers over the last few months and look forward to future contributions from Sen. Paul and any other members of Congress who take the time to help educate our readers with original thought leadership pieces," he added.
Paul took ownership on Tuesday, telling the New York Times that a demanding schedule was partially to blame. We need to get stuff earlier, but its hard, Paul said. We probably take on more than we should be doing.

Writer 'Flattered' That Rand Paul Plagiarized Him
TOM KLUDT NOVEMBER 6, 2013, 7:40 AM EST
A writer whose words were plagiarized by Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) doesn't exactly feel like a victim. In fact, he's "flattered" by the senator's actions.
The Week's Dan Stewart wrote Wednesday that he isn't offended that two paragraphs of one of his articles appeared verbatim in an op-ed by Paul in The Washington Times. The Times announced Tuesday that it made a mutual decision with Paul to end the senator's column.
"I suppose I ought to feel angry. My work was stolen by an elected official and putative presidential candidate with a far higher profile than me, who passed it off as his own instead of acknowledging its lowly creator," Stewart wrote. "But I don't. In fact, I'm not all that bothered by Sen. Paul's use of my article. Worse things have happened."
Stewart wrote that he's "indifferent to being plagiarized" due to the nature of today's media industry, with its increased emphasis on aggregation.

(593 posts)Yeah, right. Plagiarism is not a minor issue. I saw a number of students get expelled for plagiarizing from Wikipedia writing basic weekly lab reports. Plagiarism in a widely distributed paper is a significant legal issue.

Hey Paul, completely own up to it and say "I". What's with this "we" bullshit! You're the one that plagiarized and not "we", like your handlers. Stop with 'it's not all my fault' shit.

(7,402 posts)And since when is writing a column taking on more than we should be doing in the context of being President. Thinking small is the opposite of leadership. It also shows how far over his head he is right now. I'm sure that somehow it will all be Rachel Maddow's fault.

Are you saying that because Ru Paul is a Drag Queen is something to ridicule?

(42,552 posts)The word rue meaning to regret your actions sounds exactly like the first syllable of RuPaul's name. I'm sure RuPaul's fingernail clippings have more class than Rand Paul will ever dream of.

(750 posts)To taunt, ridicule, or tease, especially for embarrassing mistakes or faults are his actions of the first kind. Similarly other right wing twits are just getting back what they dish out in an act clumsily intended as insults rather than debates botched in every way. Rand Paul as a politician makes me understand his constituents. How in the world a group of citizens ever thought Rand Paul as a leader.
Rand Paul is a foolishly annoying person typical ego based Republican Tea Party supercriticalist jack hole. To suggest a duel to shoot Rachel Maddow is likely typical of the bias logic or language Rand Paul schemes in legislation. Obviously Rand Paul is even missing the point trying hit his target with the customized Palin cross hair style. Only every time he appears on television cable from my view he looks like he pulls his head out of a horses ass.

(145,143 posts)Rand Paul attended Baylor for three years but never earned a degree. Rand Paul was accepted into Duke Medical School and so Paul never graduated from Baylor.
A Baylor journalism professor has some choice comments about Paul's lack of ethics. http://talkingpointsmemo.com/dc/journalism-professor-would-flunk-rand-paul-for-an-unambiguous-case-of-plagiarism
But on Wednesday, Paul lashed out at his critics once more.
"I'm being criticized for not having proper attribution, and yet they are able to write stuff that if I were their journalism teacher in college, I would fail them," Paul told National Review's Robert Costa.
Darden was not moved by that assessment.
"It appears that the Senator from Kentucky is choosing to attack the messenger rather than specifically address what appears to be an unambiguous case of plagiarism," he said in an email. "Had one of my Journalism students made the same mistakes, I would fail them for each individual assignment and refer the case to the appropriate university office that deals with honor code violations."
