Missouri father arrested at Cracker Barrel over Craigslist ad seeking rape of daughter
Source: Raw Story
A Missouri father was arrested last week after he showed up at a Cracker Barrel to meet an undercover officer who he had contacted on Craigslist about beating and raping his 11-year-old daughter.
At a press conference on Monday, St. Louis County Detective Mike Slaughter said that it took a lot to shock detectives who investigate Internet predators, but they just couldnt believe it when 32-year-old Anthony Brinkman came to the restaurant with the young girl that he expected them to assault.
Its just a lot of talk for most of these guys, but this guy actually brought (the girl) to the scene to go ahead with the next step of enacting it, Slaughter explained. If we hadnt gotten involved and someone bad had gotten in touch with him, something bad would have happened to that little girl.
Slaughter said that the Missouri Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force was called into action after someone reported a Craigslist ad Brinkman posted last week. He told an undercover officer posing as 27-year-old woman that he was looking for a girlfriend and someone who would help him assault the girl with sex toys, according to Slaughter.

(16,191 posts)Someone doesn't just dive in to the deep end of the pedophile pool without first making sure they can swim. The fact that he did this means that he was fairly sure that she wouldn't talk, and that "regular" molestation wasn't doing it for him anymore. My guess (from experience, as a former child victim) is that he's been abusing her for years and was looking for a new "high".
Hopefully she can get the help she'll need to recover from this.

She certainly needs him out of her life but still, losing your only parent will be hard, even so.

(32,052 posts)From Daniel Tosh saying "wouldn't it be funny if that girl were raped by five guys" to fathers who actually pimp out their daughters like this, to small towns that stand with high school football players who rape girls...fuck this country.

(113,552 posts)being trashed, even though there was NOTHING in the report about her existence, or lack thereof. then I went to the news station's website, where it was reported that this vile, despicable piece of human filth, was there with "a relative". could not even bring themselves to say "daughter", his own daughter.
what is also disappointing is how little coverage this actually got. as far as I could tell, only that one station covered it. whatever more exposure there was seems to have come from raw story covering the news item.

(11,785 posts)The story's supposed to be about how important hospitality was in that culture, i.e., you'd sacrifice your own children to keep a guest under your roof from harm. There's a school of thought that the "sin" of Sodom was disregarding hospitality customs, not homosexuality. Still pretty fucking disturbing.

(113,552 posts)consequence for your DAUGHTERS to be raped than for a guest to be inconvenienced?? a sick, twisted, patriarchal culture (because I do not seem to recall those guests being female).

(11,785 posts)it's an "inconvenience"? That's an interesting perspective.

(113,552 posts)rape is rape. the old testament is full of a lot of really disgusting, ugly stuff.

(7,349 posts)What version of the bible is that? The original King James says "that we may know them."
Interesting how these versions evolve. For all we know, they might have said (if it really did happen), "bring them out so we may have a beer with them."
Lot was also the one who said that he had sex with his daughters because he was drunk and they took advantage. "Bitch set me up." Now THAT'S an age-old story.

(3,682 posts)It was very clear that the intention was to rape the guests.

(7,349 posts)My point is that as something is interpreted and reinterpreted, the meaning can change, and that we don't really know what happened, or IF it happened.
Myths and fairy tales...
antigone382
(3,682 posts)But increasingly, scholars of religious texts are able to understand the historical context and the not necessarily intuitive connotations of different phrases. So there is very little doubt that the story is intended to convey that Lot's guests were being threatened with rape.
That doesn't imply that I think the story is true or false. I'm more or less an atheist who calls myself a Quaker by the thinnest of margins because it makes people think I'm almost Amish and stops them from proselytizing me.

(11,785 posts)It was written for political reasons, in a variant of English that was never actually spoken, and given the choice between sounding "majestic" and poetic or being accurate, accuracy suffers. I found this an interesting read on the subject: http://www.amazon.com/Gods-Secretaries-P-S-Adam-Nicolson-ebook/dp/B000FC11ZG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1383868787&sr=8-1&keywords=%22god%27s+secretaries%22
Modern translators go back to the oldest Greek and Aramaic sources they can find. A huge problem is that our culture is so different is that there are cultural references and mores the original audience would have immediately "gotten" that we don't pick up on. So even if a word is translated "correctly", we miss allusions that didn't need explaining to the original audience.
winter is coming
(11,785 posts)but "know" was a euphemism for carnal knowledge, hence the phrase, "to know someone in the Biblical sense". And yes, there's a lot of fucked up shit in the Old Testament. My personal unfavorite is Jephthah, the general who promised God he'd sacrifice the first living thing he saw as soon as he got home if God would give them victory over the Ammonites. The first thing he sees is his daughter, who obediently agrees to be killed, provided she can spend some time (a month??) in the mountains with her friends, mourning the fact that she'll never be a mother. And her name is never given. If this were a Greek mythology story, the moral would be that the gods are capricious and powerful and you should be careful what you ask for, but the only overtones here are respect for Jephthah and his nameless daughter for their unwavering faith.
