Al-Qaeda chief disbands main jihadist faction in Syria: Al-Jazeera
Source: AFP
Al-Qaeda chief Ayman al-Zawahiri has ordered the disbanding of the main jihadist faction in Syria, the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant, in an audio message aired on Al-Jazeera Nov. 8.
The tape appears to confirm a letter put out by Al-Jazeera in June, claimed to have been written by Zawahiri and addressed to the leaders of Al-Qaeda factions in both countries. The head of Al-Qaeda also stressed that the Al-Nusra Front was the branch of the global jihadist group in Syria.
"The Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) is to be abolished, while the Islamic State of Iraq (ISI) remains functioning," he said.
Zawahiri said the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, "has made a mistake by establishing the Islamic state of Iraq and the Levant without asking for our permission, or even informing us." It was not immediately clear when he made the remarks.

(10,575 posts)Syria crisis: Saudi Arabia to spend millions to train new rebel force.
Saudi Arabia is preparing to spend millions of dollars to arm and train thousands of Syrian fighters in a new national rebel force to help defeat Bashar al-Assad and act as a counterweight to increasingly powerful jihadi organisations

They have described the kingdom's effort as having two goals -- toppling the Assad regime, and weakening al Qaeda-linked groups in the country. Prince Turki, the former Saudi intelligence chief and envoy to Washington, said in a recent interview that the mainstream opposition must be strengthened so that it could protect itself "these extremists who are coming from all over the place" to impose their own ideologies on Syria.
The ramped up Saudi effort has been spurred by the kingdom's disillusionment with the United States. A Saudi insider with knowledge of the program described how Riyadh had determined to move ahead with its plans after coming to the conclusion that President Barack Obama was simply not prepared to move aggressively to oust Assad. "We didn't know if the Americans would give (support) or not, but nothing ever came through," the source said. "Now we know the president just didn't want it."

it sticks its nose into EVERY muslim on muslim conflict...
the same national backers that took place in the original soviet conflict in Afghanistan are the very same ones involved in Syria...
Saudi Arabia , Iran , Russia and US.
both Saudi and iran picked their own factions in Afghanistan too to directly fund.. both of which turned on each other as soon as the soviets were gone.
the Saudis are super pissed at us right not for not playing our typical role... I cant say that I blame them, honestly, after we had been so willing in the past..
at the same time tho, fuck them ..
at any rate, this is how Saudi Arabia has always fought wars :p

(13,184 posts)Sounds more like Zawahiri trying to keep his ranks in order. They already have one affiliate, Al Nusra, claiming suzereignty in Syria; Baghdad Bob is just horning in. Al Qaeda is rearranging itself in Syria, not going away.
And this could be a signal to ISIS to concentrate more on Iraq.

Can't have an Islamic State defeated. They're losing in Syria (at this point) and to defend them would require undue effort. Better to let them lose than suck the Iraqi "Islamic State" dry or make it into a cross-border war.
