Virginia attorney general vote headed for a recount

Source: Washington Post

As the dust settled on election night, a few things seemed clear about the race for Virginia attorney general: It was too close to call, the numbers would change during a statewide canvass and the loser would probably ask for a recount.

What was then a standard-issue tight contest between state Sens. Mark D. Obenshain (R-Harrisonburg) and Mark R. Herring (D-Loudoun) has turned into something more dramatic and uncertain. A frenetic weekend search for the right numbers — much of it taking place at the Fairfax County Government Center — produced thousands of uncounted votes and an even closer race.

As of Sunday night, Obenshain led by 55 votes out of more than 2.2 million cast, according to the State Board of Elections Web site.

At times Friday, Obenshain led by more than 1,200 votes, but the totals have changed regularly since Tuesday. Some of the shift was due to a handful of mistakes attributed to human or machine error. Some of it was the result of the standard canvassing process that takes place after every election. Both types of adjustment are typical, and no one suspects wrongdoing. But in a typical year, these additions and subtractions don’t affect the outcome.

As I understand it, most of these provisional ballots are in Fairfax County where the County Election Commission (2 R, 1 D) have extended until close of business Tuesday, 13 Nov, the deadline for people who cast provisional ballots to come to the office and clear up the provisional.

For example: Someone may have shown up to vote with ID that had an address different from the address in the pollbook. That person would have cast a provisional. Now, that person needs to go the the election board office and show proof of address change, or, their provisional will not be counted.

Call your friends in Fairfax County; ask if they cast a provisional; if so, they MUST go to the county election board office before end of day Tuesday to have their ballot counted.

I find it hard to believe that we can't do something as simple as counting peoples' votes. At the end of the day the banks know where every penny is. All I can figure is that both (all) sides don't want to have a real count.

in Fairfax County to get them to appear in person tomorrow. They think it's crazy but they get it; their vote could make a difference when all is said and done here. And Obenshain would be a disastrous A.G.

There are a number of provisional voters for whom we don't have a phone number or current address, so it would be great if any DUers with friends/relatives in Fairfax County call them just in case they voted provisionally and haven't been contacted yet. Some folks told us they were also phoned by Repukes who didn't realize they were dems, they were amused by this. It's all pretty intense at this point.

We could use several more local volunteers to help with this canvassing effort. We also need a volunteer who can speak for a few minutes with a couple of Korean-speaking voters, can be anywhere in the country, just need em on the phone.

And if anyone would like to help us (crowd source) find phone numbers/addresses Monday for some of these voters for whom we have a full name but no current contact info, please PM me, we can use your help too.
