Nestle worker and union activist killed by paramilitary in western Colombia

A Nestle worker and activist of the food union Sinaltrainal has been killed on Saturday in suspected paramilitary attack in the town of Bugalagrande in western Colombia, according to media and human rights groups.
Oscar Lopez, who worked for Nestle for more than 25 years, was killed in a bar by unknown gunmen on Saturday night. Lopez, as an active member of the union, had been involved in the long lasting dispute about union rights between Nestle and Sinaltrainal.
In the protest, some activists had started a hunger strike in October, which was paused momentarily because of threats, but resumed on November 5th.
Last Friday, several activists received threatening text messages saying, you still are bothering Nestle, now there will be no more mercy! We are going to chop you up. Death to all communists of Sinaltrainal!

The killing of the union member comes two weeks after two U.S. lawmakers released a report that said most antiunion violence continues to go unpunished in Colombia, despite a Labor Action Plan agreed to in 2011 between Colombia and the U.S. as part of the Free Trade Agreement that took effect last year. The plan was supposed to improve conditions and rights for workers in Colombia, one of the world's most dangerous places for union members.
At least 413 threats against union members were documented and 22 trade unionists "were murdered for their union involvement in 2012," said the report from U.S. Representatives George Miller of California and Jim McGovern of Massachusetts to the congressional Monitoring Group on Labor Rights in Colombia.
MultiWatch, a Swiss human-rights group that focuses on Swiss multinationals, says 15 Nestlé workers have been killed in Colombia, including Mr. López. Nestlé acknowledges that seven unionized workers have been killed, as well as several white-collar employees.

(160,527 posts)The news has been known for ages that the Colombian military kills Colombians, and claims the dead ones are "enemies" of the state, they are added to the death counts, the killers are rewarded, and this murder of unarmed, helpless people rolls off the back of the right-wing scum in Washington who annually appropriate boatloads of US taxpayers' hard-earned money to fluff up the Colombian government and the military.
As citizens have said for years, these funds do NOT get passed along to alleviate the suffering of the massive poor population.
On the other hand, should the leftist President of Venezuela pass gas, we can expect to see a headline on it immediately:
Chavez/Maduro has passed gas, endangering the health of Venezuelans throughout the country. Critics claim there really is no recourse now, the U.S. must consider invading the country to save the people.
Here's a perfect example of how our corporate media treats ALL "news" from Venezuela, as opposed to Colombia's wildly selective, also dishonest news "coverage":
Venezuela churning out beauty queens amid crisis

CARACAS, Venezuela (AP) - For most Venezuelans, these are trying times. Inflation is running at a two-decade high, salaries are being corroded by a plunging currency and basic goods like milk and toilet paper are in short supply. But even as the economy shows signs of imploding, the country still churns out beauty, as evidenced by Maria Gabriela Isler's pocketing Saturday of the country's third Miss Universe title in six years.
Within minutes of Isler's crowning in Moscow, President Nicolas Maduro sent his congratulations over Twitter, celebrating her performance as a "triumph for Venezuela."
Opponents of his socialist government also expressed pride.
"There's no doubt we have the most beautiful women of the world," said Marco Sandoval, a 68-year-old retiree, as he and dozens of others marched in Caracas against the government in a protest hastily-organized over the Internet. "But nothing is perfect. We also have the most corrupt and shameless politicians in the world."

MARIELA KOHON says despite an international charm offensive the Manuel Santos regime is continuing to persecute peaceful protesters and violently repress trade unionists and activists
The progressive mask of Colombia's Juan Manuel Santos administration has been torn away by recent events.
On August 25 Huber Ballesteros, a renowned trade union leader, member of the Colombian TUC executive and a leading organiser of the Patriotic March opposition movement was arrested the day before he was due to pick up his visa to travel to address Britain's TUC conference as a guest of Justice for Colombia.
He joins some 7,000 political prisoners held in horrendous conditions in Colombian prisons, a living example of the way that the Colombian state represses critical views.
He has been accused of rebellion and terrorism. His only crime is to have organised Colombian workers. At the time of Huber's arrest he was one of the leaders of strikes which rocked the country throughout the summer.
