Rob Ford apologizes for oral sex comment, says he is seeking help

Source: Toronto Star

Mayor Rob Ford has apologized for the “unforgivable language” he used on Thursday, but is standing firm that the new allegations that he partied with a prostitute and snorted cocaine are “100 per cent lies.”

In a hastily assembled news conference in the mayor’s protocol lounge, Ford said the revelations on Wednesday “of cocaine, escorts, prostitution” has pushed him “over the line.”

“I used unforgivable language, and again, I apologize,” he said. “These allegations are 100 per cent lies. When you attack my integrity as a father and as a husband, I see red.”

Ford told reporters he is “receiving support from a team of health care professionals,” but said “I do not wish to comment on the particulars of this support.”

...... allowing this cretin to get in. And he got a lot of the vote from annexed Toronto -- those former suburbs that became Toronto when they formed the megacity. And there are probably a lot of people with Ford's mentality in the hinterlands of the former Etobicoke and Scarborough etc.

But Ford won an actual majority of the popular vote, if I remember correctly. The suburbs just vastly outnumbered the Toronto voters, and Ford's totals surpassed both Smitherman and Pantalone combined.

I was wrong. I just looked, and found that the other two candidates combined came out .5% higher than Ford. I'd love to think it would have made a difference if Pantalone wasn't running against Smitherman, but I feel like enough of the suburbanites would have voted for Ford because Smitherman is gay, that the Pantalone vote wouldn't have made that much of a difference.

I wish de-amalgamation were on the table at all in any way, but we're never going to see it.

21. Voting demographics in Toronto are really weird

Nov 2013

The city amalgamated with a bunch of outlying communities awhile back, taking two mostly distinct communities - metropolitan Toronto proper, and the more suburban/rural region surrounding it - and locking them into the same government. There's always been a rivalry between the two areas - standard urban/rural spat, nothing new there in the last few thousand years.

Ford's politics, campaigning, and public image (other than The Recent Stuff) pretty much all boil down to gathering up as much contempt as possible for those evil non-WASP latte-sipping commie hordes infesting the downtown part of the city, as opposed to the Good Virtuous Real People in the 'burbs. The demographics lately have more or less gotten to the point where someone can campaign on a general platform of "fuck the city!" and will be able to get in mostly because the surrounding areas - which hate the city in the first place, and resent the amalgamation for a variety of good-through-silly reasons - are numerous enough that they get a chance to stick it to the downtown at last.

If politicians have to lie and cheat to get into office, why would anyone be shocked to learn that lying and cheating was just the tip of the iceberg, of their criminal attitude.

This mayor is really sorry, he got caught.
