Julian Assange not under sealed indictment, U.S. officials say

Source: WaPo

Federal prosecutors have not filed a sealed indictment against WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange, despite persistent rumors that a nearly three-year grand jury investigation into him and his organization had secretly led to charges, according to senior law enforcement sources.

“Nothing has occurred so far,” said one law enforcement official with knowledge of the case. “If Assange came to the U.S. today, he would not be arrested. But I can’t predict what’s going to happen. He might be in six months.”

Assange, who published documents from one of the largest leaks of classified U.S. military and diplomatic documents, has been living in the Ecuadoran Embassy in London since June 2012, when he was granted political asylum.

and info from several legal and political scholars. The consensus was that it would be difficult to prosecute him since he didn't actually steal the info, especially since he was a journalist. Everyone seemed to agree that it would be a horrible idea politically and legally for Obama to push since some would say he was weak if he didn't arrest and/or convict (which was likely) and if he did others would claim it was an assault on free speech, etc.

I also believe that for all his claims about being prosecuted by the United States if he left were bogus and he knew that wouldn't be the case. His side also argued that the extradition on suspicion of rape was just a means for the US to get him extradited here after the rape inquiry, but experts on treaties and the law said there was almost zero percent chance of that happening.

New quote in the Washington Post article:

“Nothing has occurred so far. But it’s subject to change. I can’t predict what’s going to happen. The investigation is ongoing.”
