Abortion rights groups claim win in Albuquerque

By JERI CLAUSING, Associated Press | November 18, 2013 | Updated: November 19, 2013 11:16pm

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — Abortion rights groups are claiming victory in a closely watched, first-of-its-kind proposal to ban late-term abortions in New Mexico's largest city.

With all but about 12,000 of nearly 87,000 votes counted, the referendum to ban most abortions after 20 weeks was losing 55 percent to 45 percent.

A coalition of groups that includes the American Civil Liberties Union of New Mexico and Planned Parenthood called the results a huge victory for Albuquerque women and families.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Ilyse Hogue said the voters of Albuquerque affirmed what her group already knew --that Americans believe the personal health care decisions of women belong in the hands of the individuals.

Let alone get 45 percent? In a Dem-leaning city.

I live in ABQ...

The "piece of crap" got on the ballot through an initiative started by carpet-bagging pieces of crap like "Operation Rescue" and their slimy out-of-state ilk who got the initiative on the ballot with signatures primarily from a group of fundamentalist megachurches.

Then they carpet-bombed the city with lies about "saving babies", including deceptive robo-calls implying that all late-term abortions were just for the convenience rather than medical necessity (I got two myself), which is why they got 45% of the vote.

I was afraid the initiative might pass, considering the mendacious emotional appeals that were all over the city. Thank FSM, sanity prevailed!

I live in south-central NM and was holding my breath, knowing this was the first MUNICIPAL 'test' of their anti-women policies...my daughter-in-law is a labor and delivery nurse in Alb. Her folks are Repub, and I simply avoided politics with any of them, 'til my dil messaged me with a photo of the pic when she put Obama signs in their front yard when they were out of town and sent them a pic of it! As it turns out, she is a strong progressive, pro-choice...thank the Goddess!
